Better Wurlitzer 200A Sound?

Post by thedanamato »

Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone else out there feels the same way I do in regards to the quality of Nord's Wurli Amped 2 sound?
I own a wurli 200a and quickly confirmed for myself that there is no sound like the real deal. I'd love to sample mine but dont have the means to record a high quality wav file. Has anyone else sampled their own wurli? would love to improve the sound if possible. any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi and welcome to NUF :-),

well, having said that nothing will ever be like the real deal, moreover Nord synth Samples are mono layer (one sample used for all velocity levels) so they are not really suitable for capturing a sound of that type (which is why the Piano section uses the multilayer .npno format instead, but Nord does not provide the user the possibility to create custom .npno samples).

Have you tried to use just the "plain" Wurli 200A sample and pass it thru the Amp/EQ section using the "Small" Amp sim (or the default one, or the JC...)?

Only way is to tweak the .npno Piano sample with the Amp. With the new Wurly Amp XL sample, you can get interesting sound, unfortunately not close to any real Wurly.
I thought Yamaha was doing a good job on the A200 until I heard this comparison :
In fact I find the reface CP quite good (sound wise, how can you play on the "keys" ?).

Looked at Korg but not much luck :

Back to Nord, there are 2 samples in the nordsamples site (Classic Wurly Kurz Sp4, Wurly Kinura) as well as programs that have effects that you may be interested in testing ?

I have just posted a piece about my disappointment with the acoustic pianos. I had a Wurlitzer piano which I adored, it sounded fantastic through guitar amps. O, the old analogue sound! I gigged 7nights a week in the 70's and thought it was portable! I just looked on the web and it was 150pounds in weight. When I got my Electro 5HP the Wurlitzer to my ears - the amped one - was unusable! So I deleted it and downloaded the unamped model and I was pleasantly suprised! I'ts a bit tame, doesn't growl and bark like the real thing but to my ears it actually plays like a musical instrument, which for me is the most essential thing

Thanks Max, I have in the past but never really dove into it as much as I should have. I definitely passed on it but will look more into it.

I tried A/B test when I had a real Wurli 200a. To me, the nearest Nord sound was the plain basic unamped 'Wurli' as compared with the aux out jack from my real Wurli. With no EQ or FX the Nord sounded extremely similar in terms of Bass / Dynamics / Overall tone. What it lacked was the imperfections of the real one. The 'clunk' of the keys/hammers, the variations in volume level, the Hum.

But essentially it sounded like I was playing a really well conditioned serviced Wurli. I actually really like that unamped sound, I just wish they'd do an XL version of that one!

You can give my version a try..
The piano sample is Wurlitzer 1
I gave a bundle version if you don't have the sample also included just the program in case you do.

The OP has a Nord Piano 3, according to the signature, so he can't use NS3 files but maybe you can just provide him the "bare" sample ;)

Sample in the bundle is : Wurlitzer 1 200A 5.3, therefore the non amp version found in the Piano Library : https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-lib ... /wurlitzer
Would be interesting to take a snapshot of the parameters on the panel as this is where the magic is ?
