Look for Born to Be Wild Organ Leslie sounds
I'm Looking for settings to get that B3 organ Leslie sound on original recording of Born to Be Wild by SteppenWolf. It is a Leslie that sounds Close Mic, but tube like with a fair amount of distortion. The Leslie speed stops and starts quickly with little lag. But it's that small case Tube sound that is getting me.
Here is the recording on You tube Link
Any takers? Thank you in advance

Someone might have a patch, but I would have tried with the amp simulator + drive and EQ
Original, it was played on a Lowry organ, and on a Leslie where all the sound was bypassing the crossover and going directrly to the bottom rotor, so it might be difficult to reproduce.

Thanks for the reply. That makes some sense to the sound. would love to see if some synth layering could bring it closer to the sound.

Re: Look for Born to Be Wild Organ Leslie sounds
Here are a couple of programs that may help. I played in a 60s band before moving to Vegas and they liked both of these sounds. The Magic B3 has a program below the split you can use for the beginning of Magic Carpet ride, use the mod wheel. The Born 2B program really nails the verse sound with fast leslie.

I am curious about where this is documented. Could you provide a link?Bjosko wrote: Original, it was played on a Lowry organ, and on a Leslie where all the sound was bypassing the crossover and going directrly to the bottom rotor, so it might be difficult to reproduce.
Goldy McJohn did use a full-range leslie (no horn) because he kept blowing up the horns, but he is playing a B3 in every video I have seen. On the record, sure sounds like a B3 to me as well-

Re: Look for Born to Be Wild Organ Leslie sounds
FWIW, Goldie himself, on his Facebook page, described the rig he used to record Born To Be Wild in the studio. Goldie's FB page appears to have been taken down and I can no longer find the post (or maybe comment) that he made but I remember reading it and being surprised that it wasn't a Hammond.DJKeys wrote:I am curious about where this is documented. Here is a Wikipedia article with a quote from him mentioning the Lowrey: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldy_McJohn

Re: Look for Born to Be Wild Organ Leslie sounds
OK, Thanks for all the info and responses from my friends here. I have to give a shout out to Marc Larochelle and his Nord online education courses at My Keys to Music. It just so happens he posted his own version few days ago of the "Born to Be Wild" organ sounds in his "Discovery" portion of the paid course. It really nails the sound. Because it is his in a paid course, I won't post it here. But I have to say Marc's courses are very good, filled with extras and surprises, and he responds to emails courteously and quickly.

Hello. This is the one that I use with my group, that we do a version of this theme. It is softer, but with a lot of distortion. With the media that there are today it works great.
