Katy Perry - Firework

Post by Cbas »

Hai Guys.

I have to play this (with my band) at a gig next week, so I thought I'd share the patches I made with you guys.
I recorded a quick mp3 to try and demonstrate how the 3 patches should be used. I did it all in realtime in one take. Unfortunately the audio cuts on the NS2 when changing patches, but I feel it can be hidden when playing with a band. Also sorry for the mistakes in the recording.

The sample I use for strings is "StringOrchestra". It is nr.10 if you haven't changed it from factory settings.

Patches explanation:
I use Firework1 Slot A for the vers and Slot B for the bridge.
Then I switch to Firework2 for the chorus where I play chords in the left hand and the string "melodi" in the right
Last I use Firework3 Slot A for the "other part"(sorry don't know what such parts are called in english) late in the song. Then I switch to Slot B for the bridge before switching back to Firework2 for the last chorus.

Hope someone might actually want/need this

Have fun guys and tell me if you have any quesions.

Best regards
Cbas

WELL DONE! and WELL PLAYED Cbas!
I'd never be able to do that on just my NSEx.
I've got to step up the time table on getting an NS2.
Thanks, Hanon

:thanx: very much Hanon. You are too kind. IDK, I made alot of mistakes when playing, but I didn't want to spend too much time, it was just to demonstrate :)

Hmm. I don't understand why you could not do this on the NSEX? Of course you can not play strings from samples, but maybe it could be doable with synthstrings. But then again it would not sound the same, and I guess in this song real strings is a must.

But you have both a NSEX and a NE3 as far as I know, so you could do the song with both of them. So no (real) need for the NS2 yet my friend ;)

But I can understand if you want one of these bad boys soon. It really is an awesome keyboard. Hope it works out for you :keyboard:

Have fun
Cbas

Really good Cbas! Really good!! Maybe some extra reverb on the strings??? Just a tiny bit so it won't drown.

Thx! This one goes to my library.

Wow thanks alot :) I'm very glad that you like it and that it may be of use.

I think you are right about the reverb on the strings. It is needed. But people are of course allowed to change what they like on the patches.

Thanks again.

Nice patches - thank you very much. I have made some slight changes to these that you may be interested in:
1. Gated the synth in the first patch using a tremolo with tempo set against MST CLK (as I now use a midi clock foot switch).
2. Added a ping pong delay to the synth in the first patch again tempo set by MST CLK
3. Added a heavily overdriven organ with same tremolo gate and a phaser for the chorus patch (left hand) as I notice the same synth sound for the verse is used in the chorus, but both synth slots are already in use for the split strings.
4. Replaced Firework 3 with a copy of Firework 1 - only difference being that I opened the tremolo up a lot more to make it a bit more 'paddy'. This way I can get a smooth patch change out of the mid 8 into the bridge before the final chorus
5. Added compression - with that much going on, don't want to overwhelm the mix.

My patches an sample mp3 attached. I have only learned this song this evening so not quite as fluent as I would like, but you get the idea!

Going through the sample mp3, here's how i play it:
  • 1. Get a count from the drummer and tap it in (I will be tapping 2 and 4 throughout the song to keep in with the stick man)
    2. Hold the chords for the main synth sound and let the tremelo do the work
    3. Just before the strings part kicks in, I hold the synth on that C#Maj7add9 using the sustain and flick over to slot B to make the transition as smooth as possible
    4. Play the staccato string part 4 times
    5. Now this bit is tricky! Just at the end of the 4th time round with the staccato, we are heading into the bridge (or pre-chorus if you like). Here, I combine Slots A and B then use the sostenuto pedal on the 1st beat of every bar so that I can keep the synth going with the first chord without sustaining all the incidental notes in between. Trick is to keep the staccato going but trust the sostenuto pedal to keep the tremelo synth line going.
    6. Heading into the Chorus itself, I switch to Firework2 and use the sustain pedal for the left hand strings/distorted organ sound. The right hand continues the staccato line
    7. For the Mid8 section, I'm using Firework3 and holding the chords. Nothing special here, again I use the sustain pedal on the last chord (Eb from memory) and change to slot B for the bridge
    8. Finally back to Firework2 to see out the track with.

Just updated the mp3 as the first attempt was pretty ropey!

I've re-worked this. I now just use 2 patches but the 1st has a morph on it to loosen up the tremelo gate (the patches I already posted have this already).

Here's a Youtube clip:
