The synth is pretty easy to do, but the sound you are hearing is the side chaining of the entire track to the compression of the kick drum. This is done in the mix and may be very tough to duplicate in the patch itself-

I will take a look-

perhaps with a control pedal mapped to — inversely — morph the volume? So that when you tap down on the beat, the volume goes down, and as you pull back on the offbeat, the volume goes back up?

Yeah, I can tell you that works, but keeping it up for a whole track -even on something slower- proved quite tiring!
The new Yamaha Montage has a side chain function on the compressor (obviously it has the necessary audio input too) and a promo video I watched gave exactly this example.
I suppose if you were doing a lot of music needing this effect you could use an external compressor in your signal flow just taking a feed from the live kick, then bypassing the compressor when not needed. Personally, I resorted to putting the synth pad into a click track.

I imagine.

I wonder though: I have a Yamaha FC-7 expression pedal, and that has a spring with adjustable "bounce back" point. That might make it easier, if the band setup isn't wired for click tracks.

I mean, there's always that "one piece" you hope won't be in the set, because it's hell on the keyboard player, right?

You can also do the "pumping" with aftertouch, at least with sustained chords.

Ok, and if anyone could help create the sound, let's leave for now the effect of pumping
