looking for the percussive synth sound as used in these songs in the verses.....they both sound similar to me.....Google search says Hall & Oates may have used a Prophet 5 , but can't find the sound here or in the Clavia libraries. right now, using a layered patch with marimba and Rhodes on Korg Kronos X.
anybody?
thanks !

thanks neolithic..it's actually the percussive synth in the verse part...first heard around :43. sorry, i couldn't get the vid to load in original post. the sound at 1:25 is a string synth, methinks.

I thought i'd have some fun looking at this after work
this sound can be done with classic analog approach - the song is 1982 so pre-dates FM i think (the DX7 came out the following year)
Sampling was in its infancy back then too, so I think it's a fair bet they used an analog of some kind.
Triangle wave is your friend here and some filter envelope/resonance are needed to get the bite. I got close I think:
The modwheel is used for vibrato - there's a little in the original sound but the NS2 layers it on too thick IMHO, so i turned it right back with the modwheel.
You could fatten up the sound by combining it with a variation in slot B (assuming you don't need that for the flutey synth. I started to try this but I need to leave now
UPDATE: Added a .nsmp for my Electro owning friends. If you have a NS2, use the .ns2p synth program- it has more character and uses no sample memory

I think it was done on an analog synth. There is a similar sound in the Motels Only the Lonely, in a lower octave. Might be a good starting point for this sound:

No - it's a synth for NS2 not a sample. It didn't exist anywhere until about an hour ago when I made it
Sorry - for some reason I thought you had an NS2 I'll sample it for you tomorrow if I get a chance. Should sample pretty well, as it has no loop point.
