Triple pedal middle pedal doesn't function properly.

Post by Dugrok »

Hello all,

My girlfriend got me a triple pedal and a ex music stand for Christmas (Yay!). Pedal noise on my ns2ha88 is AMAZING. I plugged in my triple pedal last night for the first time and switched my pedal mode to triple in the system menu.

I'm having a problem however. The middle pedal doesn't work. When I press it down and strike a key, there's no resulting sound at all. As soon as I release the pedal and strike another key, there is sound. The left pedal works fine and so does the right one.

Am I missing something or did I just get a dud?

Can anyone with a triple pedal chime in?

Thanks!

The middle pedal can be used for a variety of purposes, from sostenuto/latch to bypassing the Synth section when pressed (KBGATE which may be the cause of what you are observing).
Try with different Programs and, most important, read the NS2 manual to understand how Latch settings work.

Hi Dugrok,

Max is right. There are two different functions available to the middle pedal. Apparently the program in which you are trying this has some KBDGATE enabled.

When i first "met" the KBDGATE feature, it had me scratching my head why anyone would want to do that, but over time I have grown very fond of it. For example, when playing bass you can layer a picked guitar an octave or two up to shadow the bass line, enable the KBDGATE feature on the guitar and mix it in and out with your foot on the fly. Very sweet indeed.

Bless,

Pablo

Thanks guys. I was under the impression that the pedal allowed to a sort of half sustain as is the case with an acoustic piano.

That is the other of the two functions asignable to the middle pedal: LATCH PED. The LED immediately to the left of the KBDGATE is the indicator as to whether or not this feature is enabled. To enable it, first press and hold the SHIFT button, then hit the LATCH PED button repeatedly to scroll through the various possible iterations of these two functions.

Remember to STORE your program after you've got things set the way you want them to be.

Sostenuto (Latch) is not exactly "a sort of half sustain", it sustains only the keys which are down when you press it, all the following ones will not be sustained.

To try it, take a Piano solo program, ensure Latch is enabled in the Piao Section then play a chord with your left hand, press the middle pedal while still keeping the chord keys down, then play some other notes: the chord will be sustained but the other notes won't.

The middle pedal in a real grand piano is usually sostenuto. This means you play something and while it is sounding you press the pedal. It sustains while you hold the pedal down but anything else you play won't be sustained. So try a big fat chord and octaves in the bass and hold...then fast runs both hands up the treble. Nice. The middle pedal in modern upright pianos is a practice pedal, When you press it, a felt pad falls between the hammers and the strings and kills it stone dead. Just right if you want to put the young children to bed and let the older ones practise.
