Nord Lead 2x Amp

Post by mbwc14 »

hello everyone I was wondering which amp will be the best for use with the NL 2x , because I am using a guitar amp and don't like how it sounds for pads and strings. I have in mind this but I don't know if is the right one.

I need a Studio Monitor Speakers or amp?

thanks a lot !!!

Hola, Mbwc14!

In my very personal opinion (depends on your style and preferences) the NL2X sounds too "dry" through perfect speakers or headphones.
So I use an old guitar effect box, and often activate tube amp, chorus, reverb or delay, doing a great job IMHO.

Then I have a simple but OK computer multimedia type of speaker system in my home "studio". Works even OK with piano (Stage2).
And when I gig away from home, 2-3 times/year, I have two not too expensive stage monitors. Not that good ... but the audience is mostly intoxicated.

Well ... taste is very personal ... ;)

Edit: I think the general advice I have read here is: "stay away from so called keyboard amps".

Or maybe an active speaker with a 10" speaker and driver, like Yamaha, Qsc, Jbl, etc

Hola, Mbwc14!

No, I can not seriously recommend any brand or model. Other forum members are better at that.

My "studio" multimedia active speakers are SONY. OK for me.

My active monitors are Behringer. Very nice price, but lots of comments I read and hear about them say that they are not that good ...

Very often you get what you pay for. Well known brands may also have decent products.

The most important thing is, DO THEY SOUND GOOD TO YOU?

Try to play them in the shop, play at loud and quiet volumes, use bass and high notes, and give them a good listen. Get the sales guy to play, while you stand on the other side of the room. If this is not possible, buy them from somewhere that will let you return them if they don't suit you, and do the same at home.

As long as YOU are happy, that is what matters. Take a friend, two pairs of ears can be better than one.

Wise words, Six-stringer ...

I notice I tend to listen more carefully at home. Need better sound there.
At a gig so much happens, people are drunk, the guitar is too loud, no one really cares (?) ... so there I go for cheap and loud.

Sometimes you are on a tight budget, sometimes not. As long as you enjoy playing it is fine. 8-)

Edit: I get a feeling that M-Audio, like Behringer, is not THE premium brand. But they should work.

Following on from what Six-string-man said, it's also a good idea to listen to other sets of speakers, even more expensive speakers that are outside your budget, to get an overall feel for how good your selected speakers are compared to others in general. Comparing speakers lets you hear whether your choice is too harsh, too soft, too bassy, not loud enough, whatever, which can be difficult to judge unless you compare several sets.

Good point RedLeo. Too many people spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on an instrument, then $$ on an amplification system. Even if you buy a cheap system now, you may hear something which you can aspire to at a later date. Also, it's better to buy one good speaker now, and save for a second one, than to buy two mediocre speakers now.
