Expression Pedal CC11 issue with NL4 (Rack)

Post by Muziksculp »

Hi,

I'm trying to get the NL4 (Rack) to respond to my YAMAHA Control/Expression Pedal, which is connected to my YAMAHA Motif XF7 Keyboard. The NL4 (Rack) does not seem to respond to expression CC11, instead it seems like the control pedal CC11 is still used as a modulation control signal for the modulation wheel. I have the NL4 (Rack) connected via MIDI cables, not via USB.

I tested plugging the YAMAHA Control Pedal directly to the Control Pedal input of the NL4 Rack, and the Control Pedal did control the volume/expression successfully, and did not function as a modulation wheel controller. Which is what I am not able to accomplish when the Control Pedal is connected to the Motif XF. The Pedal works with my other HW gear, and software instruments correctly. No issues. So… ? I'm a bit puzzled by what's happening here.

I did set the NL4 (Rack) system parameter on the System menu page 6 to value of c1 (Display shows 6.c1) , My global channel is set to Ch 16). MIDI Local = Off , and I set the Control Pedal Type parameter = Y7 (this is selected from the NL4 System menu Page 5 , the display shows (5.Y7)

I use Cubase 7.5 for sequencing, I also checked if the expression pedal is sending CC11 in Cubase via the midi monitor plug-in, and the pedal is sending expression messages, CC11.

The NL4 (Rack) is setup to receive on midi channel 16 (the Global Channel). I control the status of each slot via the Slot buttons on the NL4 (Rack).

Any feedback as to why I can't get the NL4 (Rack) to respond to my Control Pedal CC11 messages to control volume, instead it is controlling the mod wheel function ? Could this be a bug that needs to be fixed by Clavia ? … Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

Anyone using a Control Pedal connected to a controller keyboard able to control expression on the NL 4 (Rack) and is successfully doing so ?

Thanks,
Muziksculp

Hi Marko7,

Yes, I know that CC7 is volume. But I would like to use CC11 (expression), which is not exactly the same as CC7. But, as I have explained in my post, the NL4 (Rack), does not seem to be responding to CC11 if the expression pedal is not connected directly to the NL4 (R).

I will try to look further into this, or if anyone is able to get this to work, I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

NR4 should listen to the following:
CC#1 - morph + vibrato (modulation)
CC#7 - volume
CC#11 - morph (expression)

According to the NL4 User's Manual (Page 14)
-----------------
Wheel

This allows you to setup the Modulation Wheel and a control pedal as
the Morph Source .

Incoming MIDI Control Change messages CC 01 and CC 11 will
also act as a Wheel/Ped Morph source.
• The bottom position of the Modulation Wheel and/or control pedal
represents the parameters original setting .
• The top position of the Modulation Wheel or control pedal represents
the parameters morphed setting .

If the control pedal is set to control the overall volume of the Nord
Lead 4, in the System Menu, the wheel will be a solitary Morph
source.

----------

According to the last paragraph (which I put in bold), I'm guessing they are referring to CC7 (volume), and Not CC11 (Expression) since they indicate (Overall Volume) of the NL4. but since the expression pedal is sending CC11, and not CC7, the NL4 is not responding. I can try to convert the outgoing CC11 to CC7 in Cubase 7.5 using the midi transform plug-in, and see if that does the trick.

I will post more feedback on this as soon as I have some time to test.

Thanks for the feedback,

Hi,

Here is an update on the CC11 (exp.pedal) use with NL4 (Rack).

I ended up setting my Keyboard Master Controller (YAMAHA-Motif XF7) such that the expression pedal connected to it sends CC7 instead of CC11, and all is fine now. I can control the volume of each slot of the NL4 via the Exp-Pedal.

Cheers,
