Anybody have a SNAGG loss protection microchip installed?

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

Anybody have a SNAGG loss protection microchip installed?

Post by Westside Ryan »

Just curious if anyone has a SNAGG loss protection microchip installed in their Nord board?

Interesting. I you do decide to get one of those chips (the price seems okay for some peace of mind), it might be an idea to mount the chip on the inside of one of the wooden end cheeks. You could unscrew one, drill a small hole on the inside and glue the chip in - it would be invisible. Alternatively, you could even just use some decent quality tape to stick it to the inside of one of those wooden cheeks, but glueing (preferably in a small hole, which you can fill with glue) would be better.

That's a good idea, but I think that the chip might have to be 2 to 3 inches deep in order to be read. I'll have to look into it some more.

No, it wouldn't. With RFID more return signal is never a problem! Think of a guitar - it may be 2" deep inside the strap mount hole, but from the front or back it's less than 1" under the surface.

Personally I wouldn't screw it in the end cheek, as they might be replaced. Not sure where I would put it though!

In the product description it says "The chip should be positioned to allow 2-3 inches scanning distance".

If the 2-3 inches wouldn't matter, I think I would just super glue it to a corner of the metal housing.

What I think that means is that it should be able to be within 2-3" of a scanner, so not buried 6" deep in a 12" solid cube. Either that or it should be somewhere that a scanner can get to externally with 2-3" of space around, i.e. not 2-3" from a surface the scanner can't physically get to. Both of these make sense to me electronically, which your first interpretation (of an admittedly unclear sentence!) didn't.

I'd check with the manufacturer and see if they had a recommendation for the Nord already. I'm going off theoretical understanding based on my electronics degree, rather than hands-on experience of the product.

Indeed. Scanner too close, just move it away from the item.

The closer the scanner is to the RFID chip, the easier it is to scan. This type of RFID chip is actually powered by a signal sent by the scanner, which is one of the reasons the scanner needs to be within a certain distance of the chip.

Why don't they just say within 3"? I am now assuming that if you were 1/2" or 1" deep it would work fine right? The 2" to 3" made me think that it would have to be at least 2" deep, but not more than 3"!
