If anyone was curious about the less caustic side of the NL4 here are a few demos...

Is that first sound a preset, or did you create it yourself? It doesn't sound like a typical VA sound to me, I really like it.

These are all patches I've created myself. This can sound very very non VA which for me, is a very big appeal. This is, reverb aside, basically the sine from oscillator 1 being modulated by the osc 2 noise source with both osc in the mix.

Well, excellent work. If I would've had to guess, I'd have guess the first sound was produced by a Nord Wave.

Thanks! So far I'm liking this a lot. The only bummer for me so far is the very noticeable stepping in a lot of the knobs.

Yikes! Any ones in particular? I suggest you also report this directly to Clavia's using the webform in the support section of their site.

Hopefully this is something they can address in a firmware update.

B.t.w. Are you sequencing these knob movements or are you actually turning them? The reason I'm asking this is that (at least on the Nord Wave) some knobs give you a higher precision (14 bit? I forgot the exact value?) than when controlling the same function via MIDI.

I haven't as it doesn't seem like a malfunction. Most noticeable when the filter are being sweeped while self resonating. But also noticeable with LFO's at fast rates. Same stepping is evident while using the morph wheel assigned to those parameters. I was sure to check this because the P12 also weirdly has tons of stepping in the knobs and in the ribbon surfaces. However when stuff is assigned to the mod wheel none of the stepping is evident. However on the Lead 4 is absolutely is.

You're probably right. The thing regarding the Prophet 12 is funny though, since there's this NAMM video (I think the one where he presents the Prophet 12) where Dave Smith himself states that the controls on the Prophet 12 do not exhibit stepping and that it isn't 1980 anymore and that this stepping is easily removed with an LP filter in on MIDI controls so that even controls with a 7-bit range do not step.

I played around with a Prophet 12 yesterday and while it sounded and felt pretty nice, I thought the keybed was a bit of a let-down. The keyboard on the Prophet 8 or Poly Evolver Keyboard (I had one of these) felt nicer/less plastic.
