Sending aftertouch data from nord wave

Post by thopthop »

Is there a way to send aftertouch (pressure) information from the nord wave keyboard when using it as a midi controller for other synthesizers?
I have looked at the midi data outputted by the wave and aftertouch isn't being sent at present.
Any help much appreciated!

Are you sure about the aftertouch data not being sent? I had one in the past and I seem to recall it did send aftertouch data. Of course, I might just be wrong

According to the MIDI implementation chart on page 62 of the manual, it should send aftertouch data:

You could also verify this by plugging a MIDI cable from the MIDI out to the MIDI in port and then turning Local Controll off. You should then still be able to play the Wave (including the use of aftertouch) and if you remove the MIDI cable (or disconnect one end), it should immediately stop responding (unless you didn't turn Local Control off).

As for the 'keys' versus 'channel' in the chart; the Wave (like most keyboards with aftertouch) implements aftertouch (pressure) per 'channel', not per key. That means that there's only one pressure (aftertouch) sensor (strip) for the entire keyboard. I have an old Roland A-80 88-note MIDI controller and that one actually implements aftertouch per key, not per channel, but that's rare.

If your Wave really isn't sending aftertouch data, are you sure that the aftertouch strip still works on your Wave? That might be an explanation. For example, maybe the sensor broke, the sensor cable itself got damaged or the connector connecting it to the mainboard disconnected?

Edit: I don't think these settings matter in this case, but you might want to set these setting to the default setting and try again (page 60 of the manual):
  • MIDI Ctrl A Channel
  • MIDI Ctrl B Channel
  • MIDI Control Change Mode
