Nord Drum due for an update?

Hi all,

The Nord Drum 2 looks great. However, for those of us with the Nord Drum and like it, some aspects of the Nord Drum 2 it would seem could be added to the Nord Drum. I am most interested in being able to use midi controllers to modulate parameters.

Who else would like to see a Nord Drum update?

Thanks! Royce

Everyone would like to have those things like CC-control via MIDI!!!

But as I said in other thread, Nord Beat also needs few more things: sending Midi sync out is the most urgent one.

In general, I would like to see Nord developing more into iDevice world like other companies Roland and Yamaha have done. They have their iEditors for their flagship synths. IMO modern drum machine needs step sequencer. Well, when ND1/2 hasn't the most natural thing is develop iOS app. Ok, they have made Nord Beat but it's too simple to be really killer app. Why not give few more things like external synth tracks (I mean Nord beat could play also Nord Lead bass or any other hardware via Midi)?

Idea is to push Clavia to territory which their hardware normally cannot do. Clavia does not do workstations but with good app you could make them sing together. Am I only one dreaming of this kind of things?

Let's talk about the app elsewhere, there is already a lot of sequencing and looping apps out there, not sure it will be their priority,

..but talking about the ND1 OS -perhaps- last wishes:

There is a small 'bug'/'issue' in OS1.08, - perhaps it's still possible to iron that one out!

I complained about it at Clavia, perhaps one too many times  (sorry Nord crew!)

With the pitch bend feature I experience a sharp transition in the bending between velocity levels 31 and 32*..

I first & best noticed it using a tone with pitch-bend set at -9 + long decay;
pitch bend at low velocity (<32) was pronounced (strong bending), with increasing velocity at one point (velocity 32)* bending suddenly becomes far less, but then with increasing velocity (32 to 127) bending gets stronger again

work-arounds:
- raise the trig threshold to 32, but I like the ND to respond to very low velocity strokes as well...
- or not to use pitch bend... but I like the feature too much!

Albert

*because you can set the triggering level of the triggering button, I was able to determine that it's exactly between velocity 31 and 32 that there is a sharp change in bending..

on the Clava site the Nord Drum is now 'discontinued' ...

I saw some really cheap ones (like 150 euro), which leads me to think it will be replaced soon (or didn't sell well enough) and that shops are trying to quickly get rid of any existing stock.

Yes, it makes sense since the Nord Drum 2 has been announced on the Messe, (and I pre-ordered a ND2, so I hope it will be shipping soon!)

I was trying to sell my ND1, but when price further dropped to 150 euros, I decided to keep it, (latest bids were 100 for mine!)

but I am still hoping for an OS update for the ND1 that will correct the small issue that I encountered...
so in that sense I hope that discontinued doesn't mean they won't give it a final update
(but NS Classic has also been updated while it was already discontinued)

Cheers,
Albert

My e-mail to Nord:

The nord drum was recently discontinued.
I do not understand why, because it is a product that I have and use daily, always
with great satisfaction. May I know the reason for discontinuation?
The OS will be upgraded? Or version 1.08 will be the last?
Thank you for your attention.

The answer:

Hi
The Nord Drum is superseded by the soon to be released Nord Drum 2.
The 1.08 OS is probably going to be the final version.

bummer.
discontinnuation of a product is perfectly understandable, but quiting providing support for a product with less than 4 years since launch insn't what i'd expect from a company like clavia.
bought a second hand ND1 recently, nice sounding unit, but the lack of cc controlling for parameters is big downside imho.
guess i'll just sell it back.
not sure if buying a ND2 will be such a good idea yet, knowing what happend with the ND1 just 2 years after release. guess i'll wait a little more.

I was also a bit surprised how quick the ND1 was discontinued and followed-up by the ND2,
but the criticism on the ND1 arrived quickly after introduction, and was quite unanimous: 'we really love the concept, but...'
Perhaps latest OS version of the ND1 already pushed the hardware to the max, and you can't make a mono output stereo with an OS update..

the ND1 has a nice character of it's own, but if you were looking for that functionality I can imagine you want to sell it on, ..
I'd check if the features of the ND2 are appealing to you now. At least there are no bugs in current OS of the ND2, so it doesn't require any maintenance update.
You never know what they will come up with next, yet new functions for the ND2, perhaps a ND2D (with draw-bars) perhaps both, or neither, ..

true man. seems like ND2 is the one to go for after all.
