Different pianos?

As far as playing in a live band is concerned, are there any real difference between the various grands that cannot be achieved by a little EQ adjustment? I've listened intently to all the samples on Clavia's download page (and the comparison between the Bose and Faz by PianoManChuck on YouTube) - and the differences, even playing through decent PC speakers, are very subtle. I cannot believe they can't all be achieved just by taking a particular piano and tweaking with a bit of EQ to obtain all the others. Is this not a bit like The Emperor's new clothes?
I also wonder if the sound samples on the Clavia website are from the actual original pianos, and not from the Nord instrument. I can never get my Nord to sound the same as their examples - even using the same speakers. Would love to know what 'effects' they have applied, because it always sound much richer and more 'piano-like' when I listen to their examples.
As an aside, I recently replaced the Bose with the Faz in Piano Bank 1 on my NS2, but must have done something wrong when 'linking', because I had to go through all my saved programs to link them to the new piano (I was just getting a - sign in the model window whenever I chose a program that had previously used the Bose). Painful!
If you've come across any of my other postings, you might think I do nothing but complain about the NS2. That's not the case - there are many things about the Nord I think are great (including this forum). I guess we just tend to raise things we're not happy with, rather than the things we are.
Comments and obs welcomed, as ever.
