Broken Bells - The High Road (where to begin)

Hi everyone,
I found this great piece of music and I wondered on how to create such a synth sound (beginning, 1:13 and 2:25) on the NS2:

I played a lot with organ/piano sounds yet, but did not have the chance to get lots of experience with the synth section
I would be glad, if someone could at least point me in the right direction, on how to begin with such a sound.
I have seen, that the piano player at first uses a samle, but I don't want to make a samle, I just want to create a sound that is similar to this. At 1:13 he really playes the notes (instead of a sample) with a bit more drive. Sadly I do not know, if I should use a sample (there are hundrets available), a "FM" or any of the "Wave".
Any help is appreciated
