Connect the audio output of the synth to the audio input of the audio interface and set cubase to record as an audio track.

Probably you do not have the audio input set up correctly. When you arm an audio track you should see the vu meter signal going up when you play something (in the audio mixer window). This is all from memory from an old version [cubase 5], sorry I can't be of much further help.
If you only need to record 1 audio track, you could try Audacity (which apart from being excellent, it is also free).

You should be able to record both the audio and the MIDI at the same time. Now I don't know Cubase (I use Ableton Live and Apple Logic Pro), but I would assume you'd need to arm both tracks in Cubase to record them.

Anyway, hopefully someone with more Cubase experience may be able to help you. If you want to have this thread moved to the General section, where more eyes might see it, send me a private message or post here - this is more of a Cubase than a Wave-specific question I guess.
