Disappointed with Leslie Simulation on 4HP

Post by alex57 »

I just got the 4HP and think it's pretty good; but I find myself not engaging the Rotary Sim because it compresses the sound, whereas with the Rotary Sim totally off, the sound is full with a lot of depth; adding the Rotary makes it sounds thin, less loud, and more compressed. I have a 1963 B-3 with a Leslie 122, so I know what a good Leslie sound is, and this is not it.

Maybe adding the Ventilator will keep the sound full and rich with added Leslie? Or maybe the problem may be the speaker. I'm only using a Roland KC-350 on the gigs, since the small stages we play at have limited space to place a full Leslie or Hammond 3300.

Have you compared its sound with any PA or studio monitors? I think Peavey KB amps make the Nord sound bad, but that may not be the ultimate source of your dissatisfaction. I'm hoping a new, greatly improved speaker system helps me in this regard as well.

I seriously considered getting this to enhance the B-3 Leslie sound -

But after reading a bit about the company and its customer support/relations decided to try a different route. I'm wondering if I can achieve a similar effect with a higher grade tube preamp or DI of some sort.

I would at the very least try running it in stereo through a decent pair of cabinets before you give up on the sim. I can get a usable effect through one cab in a tight situation out of my C2. Cheers Mike

I have the electro three. Even though this and has supposed to been updated for the electro for I have read that it's not fantastic. I have found that with mine I prefer it with out the chorus. Of course the ventilator is another solution, it,only cost money.
I always thought that the strength of the Nord simulator was the amount of the grind that you could get. it seemed like it was in the right frequency. Especially if you didn't overuse it.

At least in the NS2, there is a massive difference when you play in stereo. Have you tried that?

Yes, as others have suggested, I would definitely recommend outputting a stereo signal wherever possible. How does the Leslie sim sound through headphones?

Incidentally, I often play/practise using Roland KC amps. The tonal quality is okay for mono EPs, stereo APs and Leslie simulation can sound rather nasally and thin. I would recommend a proper stereo solution, such as a PA or monitor speakers.

Cheers,
James

I happen to own E4D, Ventilator and also B3/122. It is very hard to compare any simulation with the real thing in the room. What you can compare is the recording of real Leslie with Leslie simulations.

Both E4D and Ventilator are top notch Leslie simulations, no doubt. I personally prefer E4D, stereo or mono. For me it is less nasal and mushy, more clear. You also end up with more convincing overdrive.
