I have a nord electro 2 and want to update the piano sounds. I have plugged in the usb - midi in/out cable. The software recognises the midi cables but then says cannot find synth. Anyone any ideas why it cannot recognise the usb connection?>

Is this on Windows? You might need to install the Electro 2 driver and it is not compatible with 64-bit Windows 7 - the tools for transferring sounds via USB have the same issue.

If it is on OSX and you have OSX 10.7 "Lion" (or newer), the tools won't work either.

If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot run the sound tools for the Electro 2, there might be a way around it: run an older Windows version (say Windows XP) as a virtual machine and update the Electro 2 from that. That would work both on Windows and on the Mac. You could use VirtualBox, which is free for non-commercial use. You would still need a Windows CD/image but you could install it without activating it; that would give you 30-60 days to update the Electro, which should be plenty.

Anyway, make sure you're not trying to use the Sound Manager (which you use for your Stage 2) to update the Electro 2 - that won't work.

I have tried this, but my Oracle VM does not recognize the USB connection also, i think is because the host of the VM (Windows 7 x64) does not recognize the USB so it cannot replicate it to the Virtual Machine. Have you proposed this as a theoretical solution or have you been successful on this attempt? I just bought an Electro 2 and i only have 2 laptops, one has Windows 7 64 and another has the latest OS X, both wont work with the Nord...... Im really frustated now as the old owner took away the Clav and some good pianos...... Please i would appreciate all help, thanks

OS update on NE2 is not done by USB, but by midi. Loading sounds is done via USB. What OS is running on your NE2 now? That is, what numbers flash in the display during boot?

I am having the same issue and have not yet been able to resolve it. I have a Nord Electro 2 and when I start it up it says 2.2, so I know I am behind on the update. I am using a 32 bit PC running WIndows XP and it recognizes the midi cable and says "USB Audio Device" to load the update, but when I try to dump it, it says unable to locate Nord...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm the same problem. I'm using the Windows 7 Prof, 32 bits, I bought a MIDI IN - MIDI OUT/ USB cable, but, the OS V3.4 don't work the program don't recognize the Nord Electro.
Help me, please!

bumping this very old thread because I am in the same position - running a windows XP VM on VirtualBox, purchased USB to MIDI cable, but OS Updater can't see the MIDI ports - anyone out there?

It's been a while since I used virtualbox, but depending on how it's set up you may have to enable the guest os to see and access the USB device - iirc there is a (menu) setting somewhere to do this.
