Sounds and samples

Hi there, I just bought a Nord Wave, and although I'm an experienced musician, I am a Noob where synths are concerned, so apologies in advance if this all sounds a bit dumb.
I am going through the preset programs on the sound manager and deleting those I can't imagine ever needing, but there are loads of them to go through! So this will take some time. Of course I want to replace them with sounds I like. I want quite simple sounds to start with, so I was thinking about getting some mellotron things from the Nord library, and then taking my time messing about with them. To create space I need to delete some of the inbuilt samples, but then I should know which of these are in use in the preset programs I had wanted to keep. I already found mynordwave.com, but do I have to go through all 1000 presets before I can start deleting samples? Or am I better off getting rid of all of them and starting again?
By the way I have already learnt a lot from browsing this forum, so thanks in advance for the help I will certainly be needing in the coming months!

For my style of music, most factory presets weren't much helpful. So I decided to erase them all and start from scratch. The Wave makes it so easy to program new ones! Especially if you're new to synth programming, it might be extremely helpful in order to understand the different functions, like how to effective use the oscillator's shapes do or how to modulate and cross-modulate.
If you're reluctant to clear your entire synth, then there is a scaled-down alternative that might fit your needs:
On my Wave, I saw no point in keeping all those Mellotrons in my Library. The sound just doesn't fit my style, and the corresponding samples took a lot of space on the Wave.
So if you don't need those Mellotrons, start by deleting the presets along with the corresponding samples. They are easy to find and won't break your other presets. After that, you've got a lot of sample memory free to fill!
But honestly, the Wave's ability to use samples isn't what makes it really great. I find the combination of synth methods, like VA and FM, to produce marvellous results that are much more difficult to achieve in other synths.
EDIT: I had overread you actually liked the Mellotron sounds, apologies! Then take any other distinctive category, like trumpets or choir, instead of the Mellotrons!

Well, using that site (
mynordwave.com - factory sounds) it should be fairly quick what programs and samples go together. I do wonder if the list is completely correct though, since one sample isn't used by any program and it isn't on that list.
Have you looked at the Nord Wave Program Library on the Nord site? It's in the section about the Wave:

There's quite a few interesting programs there and with one exception they don't use any samples at all, so you can easily test them out without having to mess with samples.
Have fun

It sounds like you're on the right track. With 8 banks of 128 it will take a while, so you might take 2-3 evenings to complete it to avoid burnout. I deleted 30-35% programs on mine right off. Once that's done, you can drag and drop to consolidate empty program spaces at the beginning of Bank 1. In other words, move everything to the back of the bus. Then cherry-pick favorites from what's left and copying them into your new space (that way you can tweak away and still have original versions elsewhere onboard).
Much trickier when it comes to deleting samples. If you get carried away you might accidentally mess up one of your favorite programs. The Mellotrons do consume much memory, so there's much to be gained by deleting them if you don't need them live.
AND BACKUP REGULARLY SO YOU DON"T LOSE YOUR WORK!!
