External Section Controlling 2 x Sound Modules (Help ??)

Hi folks,

i wanted to ask a question please regarding using the External Section on the Nord Stage Classic to control 2 x modules.

Firstly, with the Nord SPLIT at 'Middle C' :-

i would like to use one module (Roland JV1080) to play Left Hand Bass sounds.

And another module (Emu sampler) to play Right Hand Brass sounds.

i have only used one module at a time to play Right Hand sounds and so never used two before.

i can get the External Section to drive 1 x module but can it handle 2 x modules ??

Would be great if anyone can help please.

Best,

Paul

Sure, just set up one EXT function on each of the two slots, and enable both slots, assigning each EXT section to the desired key range. Make sure you're using two different MIDI channels for the two devices (which means setting the Receive channels in the modules themselves, and setting the Ext functions on the Nord to match).

Thanks AS,

So would i have the Nord preset stored like a LAYERED patch (so Panel A & Panel B are both lit) ?? And Panel A set to Midi CH 1, and Panel B set to Midi CH 2 (or whatever) ??

And will i be able to store a Program Change number in Panel A (for the JV1080), and a different Program Change number in Panel B (for the Emu) ??

And is the External Section sophisticated enough to be able to call up both Presets on the two different modules (which would obviously be humanly impossible) ??

Again, yes to both questions. The two External sections are completely independent. They are designed to handle one device each.

please note: your External Section midi channels are set in the External Menu. You probably want to set Panel A and Panel B midi channels to OFF.

i set Panel A and Panel B to different Midi Chanels, then put the EMU module into MULTI TIMBRAL Mode (LH Bass on Midi CH 1, and RH Strings on Midi CH 2). It seemed to work fine so i am guessing i have set everything correctly ??

But i have not tried it out on two individual sound-modules yet. How would i chain the three instruments together ?? Midi Out on the Nord, to Midi In on the EMU sampler. Then Midi Out on the Emu to Midi In on the Roland JV1080 ?? Or do i use Midi THRU ??

Ta,

Paul

Yes... a multitimbral module can essentially behave the same as two single-timbral modules. If you want to connect another module to use as your channel 2 sound source, you would want to adjust things to assure that the EMU only responds to channel 1.

THRU.

OUT does not pass through MIDI data that arrived at the device's IN. Passing that data through is what THRU is for.
