Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
Hi all,
I noticed that when you turn on an instrument, it ignores the status of the sustain pedal, and assumes it is always off . For example, if you are playing synth using sustain and you want to add the piano sound on the fly, it won't sustain the notes until you release and push the pedal again.
This is not a problem if you turn on slots. But sometimes you need both slots active to layer synth sounds, so the only option to add a piano is to turn it on.
Does it sound like a bug?

Re: Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
I do think it's due to the on/off signal for midi messages =)

Not for me.
At last, it's a question of philosophy.
If it were the other way - always sustain on - you would certainly annoy in other situations.
The best would be of course, if there were a parameter to set the behaviour, stored with every program ...
... try to convince Nord
cheers,
Bernard

Re: Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
It's the same thing when changing programs, right? At least on the NS EX , and NS 2, if I change the program while sustaining, the new sound is not sustained until I release and tap again the sustain pedal. But I noted the same already on two Roland Synths/Stage Pianos I used to play, so thought it is a general "feature" for some reason, so maybe its the same with activating instruments/sections. Still, I never really figured out why that is, i.e., whether there is a technical for this behaviour or it is designed on purpose for some reason I don't see yet.

Re: Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
I would like the keyboard to "read" the sustain pedal status when turning on an instrument, or changing a program (which I didn't noticed). Is there any good reason not to do this?

Re: Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
I would say it is typical behaviour related to the MIDI protocol. When you play a key you have sent the instruction. The status is not 'on', rather the instruction has been and gone until the next instruction, which will be note off. The same is true of controller messages. So when you switch on a slot, that slot does not have any instruction until you give it one, I.e. a new note on/sustain on.
I use this to my advantage to, for example, sustain a string pad whilst moving to a new zone to play a new riff, say on piano. For me, if the sustain held the new piano riff, that would be a major pain.

Re: Sustain pedal when turning on an instrument
hello ! In fact this isn't the only option : you could had it ON but with volume at 0… then bring it on with morph or just by turning the volume up…DrNeurus wrote:sometimes you need both slots active to layer synth sounds, so the only option to add a piano is to turn it on.
Of course, this means you have to prepare your piano before… can't do this on the fly
