Transfer speed NS2 <> computer?

Post by thedberg »

I currently own an NS Classic and want to upgrade to NS2. But I worry about the speed of transferring samples (including piano sounds) from the computer.

Today, I have 128Mb of memory and I find the slowness off-putting and tend not to try on new pianos. On the NS2 there is altogether 6-7 times as much memory. Have Clavia managed to improve transfer speed so it's not 6-7 times slower than my NS Classic?

BTW, I realize that it's not actually the USB transfer that's the problem but rather the process of writing data to memory, but I use the term transfer anyway. It seemed easier to express. :shifty:

I'm not sure if it's a real issue. NS2 probably has higher data transfer rate due to improved flash and internal bus capability. That's not something people complain. At least I've never heard anyone complaining that file transfer takes too long. I don't remember exactly but i believe it takes few minutes to transfer xl piano samples which is not bad. I've never had any issues with transfer time.

If I remember correctly, restoring a complete backup of my NS2 took about 15 minutes. That's 512 MB for the pianos and 384 MB for the samples, so about 60 MB/minute or 1 MB/sec. With this number, a 128 MB piano sample would take just over 2 minutes.

I'm sure these numbers are not exact, but I would expect them to be within +/- 20% of the real values.

Hi,
In the NS classic you have less memory, so, you have to keep changing pianos until you find the ones you like and can fit in the 128mb space.
About the NS2, you have more space (500mb), so you can put more pianos at the same time and try then in a live situation until you find the ones you like more.
This transfer speed is just something like a learning curve in the beginning, after you choose the sounds you like, you will be happy and forget about this.

Thanks all for quick replies!

Transfer times upwards of 15 minutes seem a bit demanding on my patience :| . But I think that Cleito has a point: in the NS2 there is a possibility to upload several sounds for comparison, which probably makes the selection process easier than on the Classic.

Those 15 minutes was for a complete backup, not uploading an XL version of a piano.

Where did you get this Turbo NS?
I remember other numbers.
And just for the fun, I made a complete backup again: Nord Sound Manager says at the beginning: 35 Minutes, the real time was 33 Minutes. Piano samples were factory samples, user sample lib was 355 MB, 28 MB free.
I think this is very slow.
I did no restore however.

Just because there is no sample prelistening tool, checking new samples is very debilitating. If your sample memory is nearly full, NS2 needs also time for reorganizing the memory which takes its time also.

But its the same old song, chanted many times on this forum: Memory is too little and beyond that, too slow.

btw, really love the Godwin samples!

cheers

If you just got those number, I assume my numbers are simply incorrect.

It could be faster.
I think the whole thing is not designed to change all the sounds every day.
