MIDI split help needed

Hey guys. I’m not sure if what I’m looking to do is possible, so here goes….

Just got asked to play some Yes tunes at an upcoming gig. In the interest of bringing one board (electro 5) I’m wondering if there’s a way to have my Nord play it’s typical B3 sound with the majority of the keyboard, and at the same time have a few octaves controlling an iPad via midi.

I see in the manual that you can do this with the upper part with some sort of split mode, but what if I wanted to control the iPad with my left hand, and have right hand playing organ? Is there a way to set up the split to do it that way? I’m not very well versed in midi so sorry if this is an obvious type of thing.

Thanks in advance

Key ranges are always defined by a split point on Nords. As there is only one on the NE5, there is nothing more than an upper and a lower part that can be handled differently (where the upper part is the one on the right from the split point). And while the NE5 can receive either lower or upper part via MIDI, it only can send the upper part for special purposes on channel Upper Split.

So: No, there is no way to swap upper and lower part on the Nord.

But: If your iPad's sound generator can filter part of the note-on and note-off events from the MIDI stream you can have your NE5 send all notes via the Global MIDI channel and select those that are meant to be played on the tablet. So in the end, it depends on the capabilities of your iPad's software.

No, wait: The manual says if you activate channel Upper Split, the NE5 will send notes on the Global channel only below the split point. Check that out - it may work! Then the iPad's software will only need to select the input of the Global channel exclusively (it's often set to all channels by default).
