nsmp3 format compression?

Sorry, I guess the question has been asked but the search in the forum didn't yield useful results for me.

I'm curious about the nsmp3 format. It does compress the samples right? Do we know what's the technology? Do the sample get uncompressed upon loading a nsmp3 file on one of the keyboards?

The forum says: Yes, the nsmp3 format uses compression technology. Not only for transportation, but for efficient use of memory space on the instrument.

So, it's easy to compare memory space and file sizes of the samples you want to load. It's simple math.

I don't believe there's any sort of manipulation of the files if you load them to the instrument: If you upload them back the the computer, they are the same as before - unless you installed a nsmp file which will always be converted to a nsmp3 if necessary; in that case, you get a nsmp3 file back IIRC.
