Yamaha FC-7 suddenly stopped working on my NE5D73

My Yamaha FC-7 control pedal suddenly stopped working on my NE5D73. It does not do anything at all. What is weird is that when I change the control pedal type in systems settings to either Roland EV7, Boss FV500L or Fatar SL, it works! I live in the Philippines, hence usually my Nord start getting problems due to corrosion on print boards. Anyone has an idea why this weird error occurs and how I can fix it? Not that it is necessary; it works after all, but I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I suggest you check that the peal jack is properly inserted then check also that cable is fine, measure the resistance between Ring (Yamaha FC4 has the pedal pot '"cursor" on the Ring) and Tip (or Sleeve) as you move the pedal, with a multimeter. If all OK it may be the CtrlPed input on the Nord that needs some checking.

Thanks! The pedal is fine because I replaced it with a new one thinking the pedal was broken. It is clearly the CtrlPed input on the Nord.

Hi Matty,

it was difficult for me to believe that it could have been the pedal since it works with different system menu settings. Now it’s as well strange to believe it could be the plug or the socket for the same reason - all works with other settings. I have no idea of the soft- and corresponding hardware structure. In former PC times I would have said „overwrite the OS and try again“. If not, I tend to think it’s an internal hardware issue.

As long as it works well with other settings it wouldn‘t be my main stress.

One thing just took me by surprise: At thomann and musicstore website the FC7‘s plug is a TRS one (tip ring sleeve, 3 contact areas) whereas the Yamaha website has a foto of it with TS plug only (2 contact areas).

What has yours, can you lighten up my brain?

Cheers

The FC7 is always TRS. All expression pedals should be.

My question regarding the plug was not meant as a general one - I‘ve always known myself that control pedals use TRS plugs. I am confused by the image on the original YAMAHA website
https://de.yamaha.com/de/products/music ... index.html
which doesn‘t show TRS.

Matty, I‘m very much interested in seeing your plug.

Thanks in advance for your effort.

I remember having been confused as well by that image before I bought my second FC7. Consulted http://expressionpedals.com/list-of-expression-pedals, but unfortunately, this doesn't seem to exist any more.

What they listed for Yamaha FC7 was
- Polarity RTS (whatever they meant by that)
- Resistance: B50K (i.e. logarithmic)

As the pot works as a voltage divider, I measured myself
- TS permanently 43,8~48 kOhm
- TR from 43,8~48 kOhm down to 160~100 Ohm
- RS from 100~190 Ohm up to 43,8~48 kOhm
My 2 pedals differed a little - but mostly, measuring was a problem in itself.

That's the values you should obtain in my eyes: from around 45 kOhm down to about 100 Ohm both for TR and RS. Both work fine with my NS3C. But indeed, I didn't have to get the socket back to conduct.
