Using Stage 3 extern exclusively for Main Stage

I have searched online for an answer (eg My Keys to Music tutorials) and so far no luck... and I can't see to figure it out from the manual either. I am trying to do quite a simple thing (I think). I have mostly used the Stage 3 standalone but now want to connect it to some Main Stage sounds via my laptop, but to manipulate and use those sounds ONLY via the extern section of the keyboard. Connected via the USB out direct to the laptop I can get the Nord to play particular mainstage sounds from any particular programme on my Nord... but despite following all the video advice steps on setting up Midi and Extern (eg, the menu diving, changes, midi channels etc), I can't seem to get it to exclusively play only through Extern - ie it plays with or without the extern section switched on. Is it that I need to be doing this with a Midi Out cable that goes via an adaptor to laptop usb?

The Stage will be transmitting note on/off messages on it's Global channel as well as it's External channels. You can either set the Global channel to Off in the Midi Menu or set Mainstage to not receive on the Stage's Global channel.

And if you don't want the Stage to play locally at the same time, you'd need to deselect all local sound engines or directly set the entire instrument to local-off.

Is that the Midi menu option which has Global, Panel A, Panel B etc? Do those panel options only relate to the external section then? I can't seem to find any kind of menu in Mainstage that shows where midi selection is coming from (Nord doesn't show up anywhere... but the 'output' options do)

OK - I realised that I needed to use not the generally settings but 'Assign' in a different view on Mainstage, to get it to properly recognise the Nord... and I had not gone back into the Extern menu to turn on the channel again. I think I have sorted it now. A bit of a learning curve!
