Dead groups of keys on Nord Electro 4

Post by jon54 »

Hi All

I've been reading Pablo's responses to a problem common to some users where a group of 8 consecutive keys goes dead to pianos and samples although organs may still respond. The suggested fix was to detach and reconnect the ribbon cables between the keybed and main board.
The uppermost Ab to Eb on my NE4SW developed just this problem recently. I had 2 gigs coming up, and since the effected keys were high up and seldom used I waited until after the gigs before attempting a repair.

I followed Pablo's dismantling procedure during which I disconnected the 3 ribbon cables between keybed and mainboard, then also from under the keybed, then reseated all ribbon connectors during reassembly.

Sadly the symptom remained. In fact I made it worse. On my first power-up and test I just went as far as plonking a few keys in the upper registers to confirm that the same Ab - Eb were still not working, but that others above middle C were working. A day later I realize that
  • much of the keyboard below middle C has gone silent :( And that some are not sounding on organ either.
  • the keys that ARE working (Bb down to E in the octave immediately below middle C) are sounding at full velocity, usually a dirt-on-the-contacts problem, but it doesn't seem possible in this case.
  • PLUS those same keys are sending a MIDI note that is a semitone higher than the physical key that is pressed!
I've disconnected and reconnected those 3 ribbon cables a couple of extra times now without affecting any improvement. I've also bitten the bullet and dropped the keyboard to my local repairer. I'll report back on their findings, but feel free to chip in with suggestions.
I've fixed 'full velocity' keys in the past but might have exceeded my skill quota on this occasion!

Thanks very much for your time

Regards

Was this ever resolved? I have the same issue on my Nord S4. Top octave piano and synth dead, tho organ still works.
This happened after I took it apart and replaced some contact strips.

Are you sure you placed the contact strips properly and didn't swap the upper/lower contact (i.e. mounted the top octave strip upside down)?

Recheck also flat cables on both ends for any bent pin (unplug, check + clean, replug) or bent/broken wire.

As a side note, if a NS4 (or any keyboard) is still under warranty, it is always better to send it to official assistance even if you are able to DIY this type of repairs.

Yes could be because the 2nd key contacts don’t work properly

The contact strips were replaced on the middle circuit board - completely separate from dead octave. That's why I think it's a separate issue. Replacing the contact strips was easy enough – the problem with taking the keyboard in for service is that I'd be without a keyboard 3-4 weeks. Also out of warranty.

Unless they are shipping it to Sweden and back, that's unreasonable. They are going to need one day to do the actual work. Maybe three at most. They should have a scheduling system that allows you to block a service time and bring it in then. Like when we schedule work on our cars. If they need to order and wait for parts, you can pay for those upfront.

I'd find a keyboard service technician that does this...and doesn't just park your keyboard on a shelf for the better part of a month.
