Coming from the Roland RD-2000

Post by songweaver »

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could help a NORD newbie out whose coming from a Roland RD-2000 way of thinking.

I have the NORD Stage 4, BTW.

Ok, so I would always use the program mode in the Roland which would allow me to layer different sounds together. So, for example, one program I setup I layered a piano, cathedral organ, and strings. The piano would always be on, but the organ and the strings would be controlled with 2 different expression pedals to control their individual volume. The problem is that the equivalent cathedral organ sound I found is in the synth section. I know the strings are also in the synth section as well.

Now all that to say:

First, I don't know how to turn on two layers at once in the synth section (i.e. the cathedral organ synth sound and the string section). All I figured out to do is switch between the sounds. Can I play both synth sounds at the same time?

Second, if I can play both at the same time, can I assign 2 different expression pedals to the 2 synth sounds and control their individual volume?

I've probably been clear as mud, but I am thinking using Roland terminology.

Yes you can play one, two or three synths, manual page 27: « turning a Layer on is done by pressing all Layer buttons that are already active simultaneosly with the one that should be turned On. turning a Layer Off is done by holding its button down for a short period of time.»
To control individual layers volume you can use the control pedal combined with the morph function to bring one layer up and the other layer down. Or you can morph one of the layers volume with the control pedal and the second by the modulation wheel or aftertouch, see manual p.37.

From the Stage 4 manual I understood that you can use one control pedal and also mirror the wheel function with the organ swell pedal. That means that you should be able to use the solution proposed by Valpjrgis with two pedals

Ok I got it by assigning the pedal to the wheel morph function using the organ pedal swell input, but instead of gradually taking it to 100% volume it is like an on/off switch going immediately from 0%-100%.

Sure? An organ swell pedal shouldn't be a switch type one.

Which types of pedals do you use for Control Pedal and for Organ Swell?

Tested now with two Yamaha fc7 expression pedals, works very well just as intended. I am on os 1.12.
Morph one layer to control pedal and second layer to mod wheel, swell pedal assigned to mirror mod wheel.
PS Upgraded to os 1.14 to verify it works the same way, all OK.
