New Nord user?

Hi,

This is my first post, hopefully in the right section.
I am an active guitar, bass and drums user, altough I can play some piano, I never bought a good piano. I am recording a lot at home and I am looking for either a digital piano or keyboard or synth.
I know the reputation of the Clavia Nord keyboards (I sold them when I worked at a musicstore) and I know what kind of sounds I want, I was hoping you guys and girls could help me out.

The sounds I am looking for are Piano's, Organs, Strings and Choirs, there are ofcourse a lot of keyboards out there that provide those but it is either 10 piano's, 2 strings and 1 choir, I need something more, what could you recommend?

Hi madmega

and a very warm welcome to this great forum. As far as your question is concerned you have a very good opportunity to „pre-listen“ almost every sound offered by clavia on their website here:
https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-libraries

You may report back about your favourites then, I remain curious.

Cheers from Germany

All of those voices are great, I will listen to the strings also, and I think that the Nord Electro will fit my needs the best but I saw that the 5d comes with 256mb and the 6d with 512mb, or am I mistaken because it is not a lot or can you expand it?

And, as an amendment to my post above, your sound choice seems to be based on samples only which means that you don‘t have to buy the most expensive nord - even an electro may suit you.

Cheers again

If you need all your sounds at once then memory size may matter. If not, in case you only make recordings at home, and if it doesn‘t bother you loading other ones from song to song (sound manager is a very comfortable tool for this purpose), then you may even live fine with 256MB of a used NE5.
Cheers

Ah thank you!

I think there are no other brands that have this option, right?

Hi, and welcome. Yes, many of us believe that a Nord would be best for what you are looking for, but there are MANY other options.

You said "The sounds I am looking for are Piano's, Organs, Strings and Choirs, there are ofcourse a lot of keyboards out there that provide those but it is either 10 piano's, 2 strings and 1 choir, I need something more, what could you recommend?".

I would recommend that -- if you are new to this -- you start with a much less expensive approach while you figure out what you want, and why. Many will start off with a midi controller and a laptop or tablet. This is an inexpensive way to explore all the different keyboard sounds available. Others get a Casio or Yamaha portable keyboard and start there. The sounds are not as replaceable and editable as a Nord, but it's still great to learn on.

The entry is an Electro. If it were me, I'd aim for an Electro 5, with an Electro 4 as a backup plan. No other vendor has figured out the "free sound library" as well as Nord has.

+1 for a second hand electro 5, I‘d recommend a 5D, no matter if 61 or 73 keys. If it has to be a nord because of the versatility of free sounds.

I remember that I love the korg models X50 or kross for their strings, brasses, e-pianos and synths, as well as some cheap Rolands for their saxes, brasses and choirs. One sound of Roland, I think it’s called JazzScat, is such a funny voice which I haven‘t found in any other keyboard.

Cheers again

Thanks, I will think about this, I would like a 6D and could have bought one for 1200 (not new) but I hesitated, I like it because it has 512mb of storage.

Good choice as well, good price as we should be prepared that it will take long time until we see promotion prices like 1499,- € again. And the 6 offers some more piano filters and layering possibilities compared to the 5.
