Nord Stage 3 doesn't start when cold

Post by Scorps »

Hello!

My friend asked me for help with his Stage 3 88. The problem is that when the instrument has been sitting in a colder room (about 12 degrees Celsius), it doesn't power up until the power button has been cycled for about 10 times. In warm places it starts normally. As the keyboard was still under warranty, he took it back to the store, but they couldn't replicate the problem and didn't do anything, although he described the conditions and sent them a video.

Here's the video:

Does anyone know what could be the problem? A bad soldering somewhere? A faulty capacitor?

Saying that 12 degrees Celisus is not what I'd call "cold", are you/your friend sure the problem is on the NS3 and not on the electrical outlet used in that "cold" place? Other option is that humidity, not cold, is causing issues (condensation) at the power switch level.

Sounds to me like you could have a bad power on switch. Cold solder joint, or could be a problem with your power supply... I would start with checking the power on switch first...Could be as easy as wires feeding the switch aren't making a connection...
Nonetheless you're going to have to open the keyboard obviously to get to it.

Thank you for your replies. I agree that 12 degrees shouldn't be a problem for any keyboard. Fortunately the store finally agreed to replace the keyboard as they got a permission from Clavia - I don't know why they didn't get it before or whether they asked it at all. I'll keep you updated!
