Oldschool vs. USB-Midi

Hello Key-Nerds,

a question for you...
I' m interessted if you are using more oldschool-5-pin-MIDI or USB-MIDI in your Live / Studio-Setup?

I'm using both but I think that the "Old-Midi" ist still not dying and heavily in use...
The reason of my question is my ongoing tinkerproject...:

Thx for your input

Both. For example, I can use Nord’s (or MAudio’s) old school 5 pin MIDI out to the in of my Korg PlugKey interface for iOS so they act as controllers for Garage Band or Korg Module - and I use the new school MIDI/USB to connect my laptop to my Nord Grand for downloading instruments from the library.

ah, I see. But loading samples into the synth is only possible via USB.

I was trying to find out if NORD LEAD 4/A1 Users could sacrifice their oldschool MIDI in / OUT for connecting an OLED Display.

Maybe i chose the wrong thread/topic  . But interessting anyway. Thank you

Whoops! You didn’t choose a wrong thread - I responded incorrectly. Hopefully better responses will follow!

Or... you could add a MIDI through and a MIDI merge to your OLED device
That way the Lead MIDI Out is mirrored to the OLED's MIDI Thru, and the Lead MIDI In receives a merged stream of the OLED messages + the OLED MIDI In.
That would be perfect.

I'm mainly using 5-pin MIDI, as I mostly need it in my Stage3-LeadA1 combo, and I'm very much interested in putting together a screen like yours.

Yes, Mr G, that's exactly what I had in mind. The NodeMCU microcontroller luckily has 2 UART RX and TX that would rock the job.

But on the other hand, see that more features or midi ports inevitably allow the case to grow.

I personally need the MIDI-In of the Lead A1 because I mostly play my synths in the studio with my master keyboard (Studiologic SL 990 Pro, extremely midi-pimped, of course :ugeek: ).

For the display project it would of course be much easier to do without the favorite buttons and thus the required midi-in.
The display would then really be a pure "output displaying unit"

But that would be almost tooooo easy ...
