Which Nord should I look for?

Everything about Nord keyboards in general; which one to choose, the sound manager, sample editor, and general discussion about the sample and piano libraries.

Which Nord should I look for?

Post by sercofago »

Hi, I have Electro 5D but I need something where I can layer 2 (or more sounds) from sample library. Unfortunately 5D can’t do that.
I need to mix mellotron strings with flutes, both are in the sample section. Which Nord should I look for?
Wave 2 looks awesome but I'm looking for more budget solution. Can Wave 1 do that?

Also it would be nice if Nord upgrade Electro 5 to mix 2 synth sections :) Anybody know how to crack that?

I think you should buy a second hand Nord Stage 2 76 like I have.

* Solves your wishes - layer two samples.
* Excelent HA action - much better than the present action on the Nord Stage 3 76

:-)

Most likely you will find instruments from other brands for budget prices to do that. Nord is a bit expensive and a bit limited in this regard. I´d look out for a used budget-worksationstyle synth, maybe from Yamaha (MOX series) or Korg. Since the release of the MODX the used prices for MOXes have fallen. You get a lot of power for a bargain. But be ready to accept light plastic-like handling and appearence. I guess they have around 8 layers or so.
Even the back then top of the line Kurzweil PC3k series is falling in used prices but still cost a bit more. You might get one below 900,-EUR. They sound as least as good as your Electro, have decent hardware and are very powerful. You can have 16 layers in program and 16 of that in setup mode. ROM samples for the usual stuff and non volatile sampling space, and a VA synth. And well, also the KB3 organ engine.

For the moment, you could resample the two sounds into one sample with the help of a simple audio editor (Audacity) and Nord Sample Editor 3. But with no means to adapt the relation between the two sounds.

Is this a one-off requirement for a single song? If so, I'd look for a workaround with what you have. eg make your own sample, find an existing sample which is close enough in the user library, ask someone with a Stage nicely to make one for you, try blending a strings sample with a single drawbar tone from the organ section, use an external sound from a laptop or ipad.

Unless mello strings + flute is your go-to sound of course, then ignore everything I said.

The other option is just to get 4 Nords, one for each sound

Lots of good ideas in this thread, but just to answer an unanswered question from the top... yes, an original Nord Wave can do it. (But it can't do the pianos or organs that your Electro can.)

Yes, this is the best approach. Four Nord keyboards, nothing less.
I think I have gear issues ....

That's ridiculous.

Obviously, a real Mellotron with a tape frame consisting of strings and flutes, with the tape heads set to the middle position, plus TWO Nords would be the much more ergonomic solution.
