How do I prevent volume pedal on Nord affecting midi'd synth

Post by mmckavanagh63 »

I use (in a live setting) my Nord Electro 6HP as a Master Keyboard for a Roland JDXi - the two are connected with the normal 5 pin midi cable. I use an expression pedal (for volume) on the Nord (mainly for swell on B3 organ sounds), but I have not been able to disable this pedal from also affecting the volume level on the (midi'd) JDXi.

Does anyone know of an easy way of doing this? I've read both user manuals, and the midi mapping tables for both keyboards, but the answer is not obvious to me. I have also dived deep into the menus on both the Nord and the JDXi looking for something like a "midi expression pedal on/off" type setting, but to no avail.

Would appreciate any help that anyone can provide to solve this.

Many thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

and a very warm welcome to this wonderful forum of nord enthusiasts. If you enter the System Menu of your nord, under point 12 you should be able to set control changes CC to receive only. Then your Roland won‘t be affected by it. But be aware that other control transmissions would be excluded as well.

Have fun. Cheers, and stay healthy everybody

Hey, thanks for the welcome to the group, and for coming back to me on my question.

l will give that a go - I may just have to live with this issue if setting cc to receive only impacts other aspects of the midi functionality (e.g. I still want to access the JDXI sound patches from the Nord!) but will see how it goes.

Thanks again, Michael

Maybe you should have a look into different ways of filtering MIDI events. Either by connecting the instruments through a little black box programmed according to your needs (cf. MIDI Solutions Event Processor 2, MOD Devices MIDI Event Filter, MidiTech MIDI Thru 4 / Filter etc.) or by passing MIDI through a DAW or a performer software on a tablet or a computer. Perhaps there's anyone with some experience around.

Hi Michael,
luck is on your side in this matter as the program changes (PC) are handled seperately. In the above mentioned System Menu, point 12, you‘ll find at first the CC settings and thereafter the PC settings which you could leave at Send & Receive.
Cheers from sunny Germany

I didn't pay attention - if it's only program changes, there's no need for further gear.

Hi again - and greetings from Ireland!!!

I have navigated to point 12 on the system menu, and even with CC and PC both switched to 'off' the volume pedal is still operating and changing the volume level on the Roland that is connected via midi (as well as on the Nord to which it is attached via the control pedal jack input).

I think it may be a hard coded feature that a control / volume pedal attached to the Nord will always pass through to another keyboard connected by midi, and there doesn't seem to be any way of switching this off. It doesn't seem to be treated as a control change in whatever way the midi is configured.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I'll keep experimenting, and if I do find a solution I will post it here!

Oh, this is strange. I know that there were some bugs regarding MIDI in previous OSs. Do you have the latest firmware version installed? It’s 2.52 and is usually displayed while booting the instrument.
Cheers

I did update it qute recently, it's on v2.50. It could well be that I'm dealing with a feature rather than a bug of the system!

Morning, Michael,
yes, it might be, that you‘re dealing with a feature. But if it was mine, I think I‘d give it a try. The update from 2.50 to 2.52 deals with the handling of MIDI program changes OFF and SEND. They don‘t explicitly mention control changes, but as we say in German „one has already seen horses vomit“ it might well be that the update corrects both. I don‘t know, just a gut feel. Call it hope. I keep my fingers crossed.
Cheers
