Expression pedal is not working

Hi folks!

Nord newbie here. I have my hands on a Nord Stage 2, and it's an amazing piece of technology.

I have plugged in my expression pedal which works great on my Nektar Panorama P6, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything on my NS2.

Here are some details:

- the expression pedal is made by Moog
- it has a switch on the bottom and I have tried both the Standard and Other settings
- it's plugged into the CONTROL PEDAL on the back of the NS2 using a stereo cable
- i mapped the filter sweep frequency to it as instructed using the Morph Assign CTRLPED button
- moving the pedal has no effect on the filter
- using the Morph assign to map the Wheel and ATouch to the same encoder both work as expected

I have tried all 5 options of the Ctrl Pedal Type in the system menu with both combinations of the Standard/Other switch on the pedal.

I'm out of ideas at the moment. Can anyone help??

Thanks!

Dave

Hi Welcome. There are a few system settings for different types of pedals. Please check the manual.

I assume you’re using the Moog EP-3 pedal? I actually had problems with this pedal on my Stage 3 compact, it basically worked but it wasn’t possible to get smooth and homogeneous parameter changes, they rahther "jumped" in bigger steps.

Changed it then into a Yamaha FC-7 and this worked fine.

I had a similar problem with an EV5 pedal which works perfect in the NS2, but it is not smooth in a MODX8.
I wonder if the NS2 has a built in low pass filter that smooths the voltage change and the MODX does not?
And if so, maybe adding a small capacitor in parallel to the pedal might filter out the jumps. I have not tried it yet. Might try it tomorrow.

Maybe there is a problem with cable? have you tried a mono one?

Thanks everyone!!

Your ideas are all good and put me to work. I looked up that Yamaha but also my own Moog pedal which also has reviews saying it worked with their Nord piano.

The short version is that I noticed that the one plug was very slightly bent. I have no idea how that happened since it gets babied. Nor do I know if that was an issue. But I found a spare stereo cable and used it in its place and it worked. In fact it works no matter how I set the polarity switch and how I set the system setting for control pedal type.

So,I apologize since I feel a bit stupid. I don’t have the Nektar handy to double check how the “bad” cable works with it. But I’m really glad I don’t have to buy a new pedal!

Thank you all!

Glad you found the problem.

I have three Moog EP3 pedals and they all work flawlessly with both my NS3 and A1-

None of you may care, but if you do...

I did a continuity test on the cable today and the tips failed.

So I unscrewed the jack shields and tested from inside, which were still soldered, and it still failed.

So the conductor inside the cable must be severed. The ring and sleeve are fine somehow.

Crazy. I cut off the jacks to keep since they are high quality and tossed the cable!!
