Viewing Nord Stage 2 Patch Settings

Post by eliotminn »

Help! - I have a nightmare situation in that my USB port has failed on my Nord Stage 2 EX. The repairer indicated that the USB driver chip/board needs to be replaced.

I have a gig next week in Greece and need to copy all of my patches onto a 'hire' Nord keyboard.

Is there nayway that I can view all of the patch settings from the front panel of the keyboard - including Envelope settings/Frequency Settings etc. - Can get some of the configuration by looking at the LED settings but what about the potentiometer settings?

Does anyone know of a way through the Midi In/Out that I can at least View the patch configuration so I cna note down the settings and transfer it to the new keyboard manually?

I have seen a Patch Editor but doesn't seem to install under Windows 10.

Any advice greatly received.

one parameter at a time can be jotted down on a piece or paper or typed into a word processor

press and hold the SHIFT button and then turn the desired knob to see the precise value

Pablomastadon,

Thank you so much - you have saved my life!

This is not mentioned in the Nord manuals anywhere.

On another tact, have you had any success using ctrlr app on a PC with the Nord 2 dumping the patch settings through this midi interface.

I have installed a ctrlr version with the Nord2 panel in it - I can see the Nord dumping midi messages through the log in ctrlr but it is not changing the panel schematic - it is supposed to reflect the config of the Nord 2 but is clearly not. I may need to enable a flag in the application to process the midi information coming in but not sure where this is.

Thank you again as your solution provides a good workaround to trying to dump patch settings through midi.

Why don't you just save your patches as a Bundle (or a full backup)? Of course assuming you will "hire" a NS2 there (best if EX otherwise you need to consider the half piano memory space of NS2 "classic" when preparing your bundle)

On Ctrlr instead you need to set (in its preferences) the MIDI in/out ports and channel that Ctrlr needs to listen to. I use it on the Mac with my NS2 and works fine.

Is that possible if, as he states, his USB port is fried...?

Whoops... I missed that key point  however, if I remember well NS2 still has a "dump" functionality (in the MIDI menu) that works via MIDI which could be a workaround (using a sysex librarian), otherwise I'd search locally (in the UK area where the OP lives I mean) for another NS2 to do the job.

PS: yes I remember well

that + a copy of the Piano and Synth samples currently loaded should be equivalent to a full backup.

Actually, it IS mentioned in the manual, set off with a little light bulb and italicized for emphasis. I point this out not to berate you for having missed it, but as an example of how something which is seemingly terribly important occupies only a tiny amount of space in the manual and how easy it is to overlook when reading the manual as casually as one might read a story. Nord manuals are very technical in style and need to be read that way. For my first time through I usually highlight the things which stand out to me as extra important so that I can find them back easily on subsequent reads.

PS -- the sysex dump thing should be another good route to solving this knot, but that's a process which I would want to test drive at home a couple times before trusting it to work correctly for me on a long distance trip.

If the number of programs you need to copy is not large, I'd stick with writing down values manually. An added bonus there is that doing so will be something of a refresher course in how you achieved those programs in the first place! ;-) Especially with synth programs.

I didn't think it could help - but if there is still a sysex functionality in NS2ex, you might look for the NS-classic SysEx tutorial:

Are you sure that the gig will take place? As a Greek guy I have to inform you that due to the corona-virus the government has just announced that all concerts, cinema's, theaters etc will be cancelled for the next two weeks.
