Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the difference between "2.0 nsmp" samples and "v5 .nsmp" samples?

I see the same sample in each format is a different size. This is important, as there is not a lot of room on my Electro 5 for samples, so every little KB I can save makes a difference!

And, does anyone know where I can find those "v5" samples...I seem to only see the 2.0 on the Nord site? Thanks in advance.

I think the Nord sample library has samples in two versions currently, 2 and 3. The main difference is that version 3 samples also have default values for filter and velocity settings, which newer instruments can load.

The Nord piano library is different; it loads to another part of your Nord, and has a different format. The current version of the latest piano (the white Grand) is version 6 (v6), as are the latest Rhodes samples. Older pianos are available in version 5.3 or 5.4 typically (v5). The v6 samples hold, I think, different/optimized filter settings, amongst other things.

So unless I've misunderstood something, version 2 and 3 refers too samples whereas v5 and v6 refers to pianos.

The samples I have on my Electro 5 are "samples" (mellotron, horns, synths, bells, etc...) and some of them are called "v5"

Baekgard explained it as it should be, the v5/v6 is pertinent only to piano (.npno) samples, but all is possible.
Make same precise examples and explain exactly where do you read that "v5" so others can double check and provide you a more specific feedback.

PS: have you tried to check those samples also on Nord Sound Manager? What do you see there?

There are so many examples, but here's a few:
- 12 Str Guitar1__DV mono 2.0 vs 12StringGit__DV mono v5
- Bass Flageolet__BR mono 2.0 vs Bass Flageolet__BR mono v5
- Celeste__ST mono 2.0 vs Celeste__ST mono v5

(**having a look now, I also see some "v4" samples on my Electro - G2 StereoPad__ste CLv4.nsmp, G2 VA Strings__ste CLv4.nsmp, ...I wonder what these are?)
I always use the Nord Sound Manager, and this is where I see the differences in the size of these samples.

I was just curious what the differences were, and if these older v5 samples were still available? It's possible they are an old format (that was used when the Electro 5 was new?) but I have never heard of this format before. Just looking for information, that's all.

I had a brief look through some of the samples (whew...there's a lot of them!) and most of the 2.0 samples are smaller, so that's good But in some instances a v5 sample was smaller than it's 2.0 equivalent and that's what prompted me to ask this question... I will continue my researching on the internet.

those various "v-something" are only in the sample name, not in the sample format. So they probably just refer to the "version" made/recorded/sampled by whoever produced the sample. For example, if I produced a brass sample and called it "Spider_Brass_stereo" and later uploaded a better version, I would call it "Spider_Brass_ste_v2" but that's only just a name really.
The proprietary Nord sample format is a different thing, there have been 3 revisions, the latest one (only usable by last-generation Nords) is 3.0, while 2.0 is still used by all Nords before the Stage3-Electro6-Piano4-Grand. Samples v1.0 are basically the same as v2.0, they only use a bit more memory but they can be loaded and used just as well.

Your starting question went into another direction: It was the question of saving bits. So if you have sounds with the same name, sometimes "v5 .nsmp" (in the file name) and sometimes "v.2.0 nsmp" (not in the name, but as the label for the versioning) - where did you find them with different file size? As they might even be identical.

Maybe we get closer to your question.

I'm new to Nord, so am just following to learn more. What I would like to know most: If your files in question are from the Nord Sample Library Archive (neither v2 nor v3 samples) - can they be loaded into a current Nord gear?

I did look in the "Sample Library Archive", and I didn't see any samples labeled v5 there. I downloaded a zip file that had samples that were of interest to me, and they simply were labeled "1.0".

This is true! Both of them work on my current Nord keyboard (Electro 5). I was curious where they came from, and whether I could get them again if I wanted them?

I can see their size by looking at them in the Nord Sound Manager Program. They are different sizes.

Actually, it's not that big a deal...I thought someone might know the v5 history, and whether they'd still be available to download from the Nord site. I can't seem to find them anywhere on the web, but they exist on my Electro 5. Because I bought it 2nd hand, it's possible they have been on the keyboard since it was new...
