Re: Nord grand
Wow, that is just incredible. The piano sounds great under his fingers.
Makes me want to reload the Mellow Upright and give it another shot.

He did sound cool, didn't he!
I just got a concerning post made by a player on a YouTube video from Jack/Andertons about the NG. Here it is:

I replied to him asking if the KBD Touch was set to Heavy. It may have been set heavier than he is used to playing boards. When my NG gets here I will test this right up front and will report back my findings. If it is missing notes it will go back. This is "version one" of a keybed supplied by Kawai and I am not going to deal with sitting on a "version one" brick. I have had my concerns about the Kawai action. If it is bad, I will not consider anything again made by Kawai. I have an MP11 sitting on its side in a closet because of the failing action. The MP11 needs to go bye-bye.pieeetr wrote:Did you experience any silent notes while trying to play really really soft? I tried the Nord Grand yesterday and to my surprise, while I was trying to play softly the action didn’t register my touch at all resulting in silence. Did you experience any of that while you were playing around with the grand?

Re: Nord grand
It's very hard to judge an online comment without further context, but I'd say that's the normal behaviour of an acoustic piano, the key will not sound if you strike it very softly-slowly.HwyStar wrote:I just got a concerning post made by a player on a YouTube video from Jack/Andertons about the NG. It may simply be that that user is not used to a realistic piano action, which unfortunately is more and more the case, as many "piano" players have grown up playing only digitals.
The RHIII action has a very pronounced escapement, which adds an extra resistance at the bottom of key travel and will make it a bit harder to produce sound at extremely low velocities. But again, that's normal behaviour, even if it is missing in all the FATAR actions used by Nord.
I've never had nothing but outstanding experience with Kawai actions, of course a faulty-damaged unit can always happen, but in my experience they're by far the best actions available, even better than the Yamahas of the comparable price class.

I also to confirm that's a normal behaviour on acoustic grand pianos and digital also.Spider wrote:I'd say that's the normal behaviour of an acoustic piano, the key will not sound if you strike it very softly-slowly.HwyStar wrote:I just got a concerning post made by a player on a YouTube video from Jack/Andertons about the NG. Sorry but I can't understand, why professional reviewer don't know that? Shame

I agree, Rychubil. There is that very fine line of when the piano key engages a string and does not hit it. I went over to my Steinway and duplicated the same movement of barely pressing a key down. It went past the escapement and made no sound at all.
No such luck here of delivery of an NG; for at least another month. Bummer. Hurry up and wait... I can't complain. I have something to play on. Yes, I am spoiled but I did work "very hard" to get it.
If anyone else gets an NG, please be sure to give us all the details of your new board!

Re: Nord grand
On an acoustic piano, engaging a key silently allows for selective string resonance. As opposed to the large mass of resonance when the damper pedal releases them all.
Try silently engaging a set of notes with your left hand, then hit a staccato set of notes with your right. It’s very subtle on a real piano, but definitely there.
I used to fool around with this as a special effect, but haven’t thought to try it on any digital instrument. I’d be amazed if that actually works.

Re: Nord grand
It does, at least on my Nord Stage (but you have to press they keys very very gently to get it) but also on other models, e.g. my Kawai VPC1 and most hi-quality Virtual Pianos can handle the so called "Silent Keystroke" (i.e. a MIDI NoteOn with Velocity =1) properly.PScooter63 wrote:On an acoustic piano, engaging a key silently allows for selective string resonance. Re: Nord grand
Guys, even on my cheap Roland FP-30 that effect of silent notes is existing.
Oh no! My guess how are you feeling right now. but remember - hunger and expecting is the best spice of meal.HwyStar wrote: No such luck here of delivery of an NG; for at least another month. Bummer.
