NS3 trouble sending program changes to MainStage 3

Hi guys,

I have a problem: the sounds in Mainstage 3 stop immediately, when I switch a program on the NS3 which sends a new program change on global midi channel 1 to Mainstage. With the NS2 I never had this issue...
Does anyone have the same problem or is this a known bug on NS3?

Best, Manu

Why would you even think it's an issue with the NS3 when it's Mainstage that's getting the MIDI PC and generating the sound?

Because I don`t have any issues with the exact Mainstage-File when I change the programs on my NS2. So I was wondering if it has anything to do with the NS3.

Turn of the setting that the NS is sending a PC?

Well, actually I want that the Nord sends program changes. I have 2 patches in MS I need for one song. So I switch between them by changing the program on the Nord. On my NS2 it was always like a seamless change and now with the NS3 the MS-Sounds stop immediately by switching.

Could it be related to a change that was made back in October with V1.52?
Extern section now sends Note Off and Sustain 0 messages when exiting program using Extern, to avoid hanging notes.
Just a thought.

That could be possible! Is there any chance to change that?

Yes, you just don’t use the Extern section. I don’t use it with my MainStage setup at all. To me it’s much easier to configure everything from within MainStage itself rather than using the Extern section or turning off local control and routing the Nord’s MIDI signals back into itself with an External channel strip. I used to do it that way but found that it caused more problems than it solved.

I see. What is then your exact way using Mainstage with the Nord? I mean you need the extern section to get your midi there if you also have presets where you just use Nord sounds and therefore can’t send midi on a global channel.

I use a pedal to change presets in MainStage, which is set to send program change messages to the Nord to switch its own sounds. When I use MainStage I let it be the “hub” that functions as the control center. All changes are routed through it and sent to all the hardware. This is one of the many strengths of MainStage: its flexibility with routing and transforming messages.

My current setup is using a Boss FS-7 with the two pedals mapped to the up/down functions in MainStage for cycling through patches/sets. I make what I call a “dummy” channel strip that only functions to send the right PC message to the Nord to tell it which preset to switch to. I can do this with other instrument channel strips or with the Nord’s sounds alone depending on the patch.

I use a Radial Key Largo which lets me have the Nord’s audio act independently of the sound in MainStage. If I ever need to route the Nord’s sound into MainStage to apply some effect I can do that, but I have generally moved away from that.
