Pitch Bend receive on Electro 6D

Postby mattsitc » 23 Feb 2019, 21:45

Does anyone have any insight as to why I can't get the Electro to receive pitch bend from my Korg M50. I checked all midi settings on both keyboards, still not sure why it wont work. When I move the joystick, the midi light on the Electro flashes indicated it's receiving the message, but no pitch is bending...Thanks, Matt

I'm pretty sure it doesn't respond to pitch bend. I saw this stated in a review, but I can't find it again. But there's nothing in the MIDI implementation chart for pitch bend, so I think that's accurate.

If it works like the 5D, external pitch bend only works on “synth” samples.

It also only worked on part = Upper, which was what could be assigned to an external keyboard. The closest equivalent on the NE6 is the "External KBD to LO" function, so maybe it works with that...?

From NE6 OS updates history https://www.nordkeyboards.com/products/ ... te-history you can see that in v1.12 one of the changes was:

  • MIDI Pitch Bend is now listened to on External KB MIDI channel.

I also had the PB question!

So does this mean if I update my Nord's operating system, that the PB from external keyboards should effect the Nord's sounds? Also, does anyone know of a small pitch bend unit that could sit atop my keyboard (instead of having to use set up a whole additional keyboard just for access to pitch bend)

Pitch bend works for Sample Synth, Organ, and Piano sounds with an External Keyboard split setup. In the Program section, switch External Kbd to Lo on. In System Settings, change the ExtKb channel to 2 or any channel matching your MIDI controller output MIDI channel. (If for some reason you need your controller to match the Electro on channel 1, then you must change the Electro's global channel to something else.) Connect the MIDI out on your controlling keyboard to MIDI In on the Electro 6. You can select Lo in any (or all) sound engines. The pitch bend on your external keyboard will now control the pitch of the Sample Synth, Organ, or Piano sounds on the Electro. I've tested this thoroughly and it works beautifully. Of course having a pitch bend on the Electro would be nice but I doubt Nord is going to implement this to draw sales away from their Stage models. Also, you can have the external keyboard behave as the lower manual of a two manual B3. Turn Dual Organ on in the organ section then turn on External Kbd to Lo. The Zone LEDs in the organ section will illuminate red (Lo) and yellow (Up) in this configuration. Drawbar settings when selecting Edit Lower will not determine the registry settings for the external keyboard.

Awesome! I haven't tried it, but I'm really excited about the possibility.

Thanks for sharing Marc!
