Does Nord have a preset list for the Stage 2? The presets that come with it?
I downloaded an .xls file a user posted here, but does Nord have an official one? I can't find it in the manual

Nord does not have a published list.
The one on the forum is the only one that I'm aware of.

I am a teacher at a music school that just purchased the Stage 2. I don't own one myself and am trying to learn ASAP so I can teach it's operation to others.
I am a full-time musician with over 30 years experience with synths, starting from the ARP 2600.
lack of an official preset list is BEYOND LAME!
The preset list is the starting point for finding sounds.

That is because you will "always" make your own presets with a NS.
Using the preset list of someone else (Nord or Gustave) is not the approach.
It is a common point of view that sound creation is part of music.
This NS2 can be a very nice tool to teach that.

I share your point of view that a list would be helpful, if we had the possibility to export in a text file (or just copy / past as text) a list of Sample/Synth/Program from the Nord Sound Manager software. Please Mr Clavia ?

It certainly can be a startingpoint for tweaking sounds that come close to what you need.
On the other hand a list contains programs that might be rubbish to me even though they're useful tor the guy who created it and vice versa.
See the millions of sounds for the DX7 that stray around on the web. I would hardly more than a handful declare to be great and useful sounds.
Starting from scratch is also very educational as far as you see through the concept of the particular sound generation. And if you don't the programs degenerate into exactly what it is called: a preset list.

So you're saying Nord doesn't provide a preset list because they are trying to teach their customers not to use their presets? I don't buy it. I don't think Nord cares whether we use their presets or make our own, I think they would be perfectly happy to have us buy Nords regardless of how we want to use them. Besides a preset list, I wish there were a list of which Sample LIbrary sounds were pre-installed, which included a list of which patches use them. I want to delete samples to make room for others, but I"m always afraid that I may be rendering some nice patch useless. I'd like to be able to easily see (and therefore then be able to hear) which presets include a given sample, so I could check them out and be sure I don't care about them before removing a sample. This would also let me know which program slots are then free to be used for other sounds, once I remove a sample they are based on.

That's very nice work there! I did something similar but less complete a while back, and then saw yours which had a lot more info. It kind of addresses what I was talking about. It provides a list of patches, and lets you know what samples they use, but in this case, I was actually talking about the desirability of the reverse... a list of samples, which lets you know which patches they are used in. But one could use your spreadsheet and do a search for, say, "m400" and find all the patches that use an M400 sample, so it would be helpful for this purpose as well, if not quite as direct.

Another unfortunate omission is that Nord does not provide MP3 samples of each and every sample. So the only way to have any idea of what they sound like is to load them into the Nord. Considering how long it takes to add and delete each handful of samples you'd like to try out, that can be a very time consuming process, which is frustrating since there are some where, if you had even an idea of their general sounds, you could tell you wouldn't want to bother with.

My spreadsheet is designed as a database. There's a dropdown menu on the left side under the main menus in Excel, where several cells or groups of cells can be named. There you can choose "database", so the complete data set is selected. Then you can choose data/sort from the main menus to sort the complete data set by a maximum of three coloums.
So you may sort by "(1) Wave", "(1) Nr./Alg" and you get the list of all samples used in SlotA, choosing sort by "(2) Wave", "(2) Nr./Alg" you get all sorted by waves (samples) used in SlotB. Hope that helps a bit. (I still use Excel 2003, so the more modern versions may differ a little bit.)

Yes, thats true. When Nord came up with the brass samples (and now with the Oberheim samples) I first had to clear some sample memory before I could listen to every sample. They provide a demo of course, but not with every sample and playing a sample is another story than just listening and very important for me to judge the suitability for my use.
