Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Blinded by the light

AFAIK, the original keyboard rig consisted in a CP-70 with a phaser, a Hammond and the MiniMoog typically used by MM.
Not perfect but a first try. I use the 2nd panel just for the synth slide (a bit difficult to switch between), but ok if you have band that "fills" the void ;-).

Hej Johannes.

Sounds good:)

I'm not a Manfred Mann expert at all. But it sounds to me like the intro sound is not played on the CP-70. It seems to me, that it is played on the hammond with added phaser. The organ is two-manual, so the intro sound is probably played with left hand, while playing the other organ stuff with the right, before it shifts into the synth stuff.

Later in the song at 4.48 you can hear the cp-70 more clearly and it sounds nothing like the intro-sound.

I tried playing the organ with phaser and it sounds about right to me.

Just my thoughts. I might be wrong of coarse. You can try it out and see what you think:).

Have fun. And thanks again for making this nice forum.

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I had exactly the same feeling that it was probablymor an organ based sound (probably some transistor model), but then it just didnt sound "right", and after some researching I found among others this discussion: http://www.the-gas-station.com/messages ... days=40204&
which basically argues that it was a CP-30 AFAIK, MMEB used at least the CP 30 and an CP 70, but it is really hard to tell in the end.

Yeah okay. Then it probably was a cp-30 with phaser, but I don't know much about that sound.

Unfortunately we don't have the cp-30 sound on the stage, so I would probably use the organ with phaser or perhabs try wurly.

The sound is closer to hammond than the cp-80 imho.

What do you think?

Nice find with the article. :)

Just an update: It might back in the 70ies have been more likely a Rhodes, as it can be seen e.g. here:
So I created an updated patch with the following features:
Panel A: Rhodes w/ Phaser (Intro) and Organ (Use MOD Wheel to morph between the two sounds)
Panel B: Moog kind of sound with portamento for the Glide, Aftertouch controls the Vibrato towards the end.
Sustain is activated only for the Synth so you can play the Glide than sustain, switch the Panel anc continue playing while the synth still sounds.

Wow, I am really impressed by the sounds you created. I am pretty sure that in the mix (e.g. in a live situation) nobody could tell the difference with the original.
Good work!

Hi Johannes,
hast du den Sound auch für einen NS2?

I'm no expert but I've always thought the intro was a Rhodes piano with a phaser effect, it sounds like it's being doubled up an octave apart (like two rhodes sounds layered an octave apart with a phaser......whatever it is it sound really great and is one of the greatest rock songs out there :) I'm just trying to get this sound on my NE 5HP which is how I ended up on here :)

I've had success with this song using a very perc-heavy B3 sound - with almost all the drawbars off, and then combining it with a rhodes underneath.
