Wondering about the use of a NE5/6 as a home (non-gigging) player? I'm considering the NE because of reputation, combination of organ and piano sounds, drawbars for organs, and the SW waterfall keyboard. I also have some VST pianos I like playing. Is it worth the extra cost?

I would say yes. If I had the space resp. room at home to set up my NE5D and connect it to the stereo I would be very happy. I guess I would often annoy my family by playing organ loud to Deep Purple. If I were you I'd buy a NE 5 or 6 in 73 key version and would sure love it.

Until October 13th I'll be a home player.
After that I'll be a 1 gig player - a gigging musician at last! ;)
On keys at least. On bass and guitar I've done some more gigging.

I wanted a NE5D mainly to get the magnificent organ sounds into my own playing and recording at home.
To end up in a band was just inevitable evolution.

kmonroe99, be sure to consider a set of high-quality headphones and/or monitors for your home experience.

There are many discussion threads out there that cover this very well. Most recently:

I don't think it's a great home choice, personally, unless you're very tight for space. In a typical stationary environment where size/weight don't matter, you can get better actions in a pair of boards for piano and organ playing, and often better sounds as well, especially if you connect a computer.

+1 and if you already have good Virtual pianos then for the organ all you need is a good Virtual organ, such as VB3 II (you can download the demo and try it for free from Genuine Soundware https://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=44)

I got a good discount coupon on Amazon for a NE6D-73 so I'm going to give it a go. I've got some Rokit 5 monitors from an old guitar interface that should work well. I know a lot of people prefer the Yamaha HS series, but since I've already got the Rokit's...

I don't usually use headphones but I may have to look into some AKG's.

If the NE6 doesn't work out, I may just have to go with the controller/VST route.

I use a NE5 73SW in my living room connected to my stereo. I know it’s not perfect sound-wise but for me it’s more than enough and without monitors it’s more living room compatible. While I know that there would be better choices sound-wise with more than one board, i‘m pretty in love with the Nord interface. I don’t regret getting the NE5 at all.
