Double "rotary speaker"

Post by offrhodes »

As the subject line reads...
... might be reason enough for me to upgrade in the future to Nord Electro 9 / 11 / 13 :-)

Sound sample here, 4:00:

And you can see them (left of the piano) at 6:45:

They didn't use two Leslie's because of the sound, they did it to increase the volume on stage. Only one of those Leslie's would be mic'd up for the sound system.

That's what the internet thinks but sorry, I disagree. This is not a close-mic setup - the organ stands on top of everything, you'd obviously hear the horn passing by the mic on chorale speed.
And it wouldn't make a difference to the overall sound at a distance, they wouldn't have bothered to carry the heavy box.
"Difference to overall sound" includes volume, yes, but it's not the whole story.

Your entitled to your opinion, but as both an owner of multiple B3's and Leslie's and having spent 20+ years running sound for lots of the very types of bands and setups your referencing I can assure you that wasn't why the extra Leslie's are on stage.

Then let's ask the other way round: If it's not the 2nd box, then how do they get this smooth sound?

Food for thought: In the studio, they used to put the Leslie into the bathroom. Common sense tells me that a 2nd, active box will contribute more dBs to off-axis response than just some reflections from the wall. And "off-axis" pick-up might actually be just the right thing here, I wouldn't want "exactly" the same signal twice to avoid phasing issues.

I'm not looking for a big difference, a Nord on 888888888 and OD adjusted to taste comes already quite close to the recording..
My point is just, like probably quite a few folks I'm willing to spend more money on a "better" organ / speaker sim, and this is one sound I'm looking for.

You are definitely only hearing one Leslie on that recording.
One Leslie mic'ed, close, in mono, and compressed to hell. Done.

(Note that mic'ing in mono is not the same thing as taking the stereo Nord sim and making that mono — one of my biggest gripes about the Stage is that the Nords don’t actually have a mono mode. Summing the two sides gives you a "double-peak" Leslie horn that sounds really annoying. You need to have something plugged into both outputs, but listen to only one of them for an actual mono Leslie simulation on the Nord — and most other sims, as well.)

On KC, they made me discover The Latchy Doley Group. He's using two Leslie's, one 122 and one 145, I asked why but didn't get any answer...But his sound is awesome, could it be coming from the two Leslie's?

1st. thanks for the reference to the Latchy Doley Group, I wasn't aware of them and from the couple of youtube videos I've checked out they are awesome.

2nd. No way to interpret the two Leslie's to what you hear in a recording. There really isn't much difference between the 122 and the 145 so most likely what you saw was what was available from the rental house for that particular show. (they don't generally tour with that sort of gear unless its specifically custom modified, they just rent it locally).

As a matter of fact, my Yamaha CP70 and B3 used to get rented for a lot of shows back in the 80's.
