Using Monitor In, help,

Post by Rusty »

Hi,
I am using my IPhone connected to the monitor in input on the back of my NS2ex.
The music from my phone plays fine through the headphones output but I also want it to come out of the channel 1 output too, or ch2 3 or 4 it doesn’t matter.
But I cannot find where to enable this, is it possible?
Thanks
Current Keys, Nord STAGE 2, Roland Fantom X6, KORG M3 61. KORG M3 76.

Unfortunately not possible in the NS2/EX. I believe that it works like you want in the NS3. You could use the headphones output, but that is not ideal as the signal levels might not be the right ones, it might distort, etc.

Not possible. On NS2 by design the Monitor In is connected only to the headphones. You need to use an external mini-mixer (search the forum, many discussions on this topic and suggestions for various mini-mixer models)

Although, if you're very careful, headphone outs can be used in a non-critical situation. Get a suitable custom cable to split the signal, and dial the Nord way, way down. Not recommended for regular use, though.

Back in the day, an electronics chain named Radio Shack sold an 1/8”-to 1/8” attenuating parch cord, expressly designed to take a headphone output down to line level. I had one once, and know it would be perfect for this application.

I wish someone still made something like this.

I have exactly this cable
https://www.musicstore.de/de_DE/EUR/Cor ... 003445-000
and it works quite well with our Soundcraft Band Mixer and my NE5D. No distortion, no level problems. Maybe good for the Stage as well ...

At any volume level? Did you try that? If so, it is an interesting bit of info. Usually you have to put 2 resistors per output, one in series and one in parallel to match the impedances.

At any volume level? To be honest - I haven't checked it up to all maximums. I just used the boards as I use them with seperate cabling. On stage I put the two keyboards via stereo cables into my personal mixer - 4 cables, 4 channels. I usually have the volume potis at about 60 to 70 %. In the rehearsal room I don't want to build up all the things, so I just put the two outs of my korg into the NE5D's Monitor input and then the nord's headphone out into one stereo line in at the soundcraft. As it worked right from beginning I didn't question it. I have a rehearsal tomorrow, I will test its limits and report again.

Here I am again, back from rehearsal and testing. Put the korg's volume at maximum, the sound was good, no distortion. Put the nord's volume at maximum too, no distortion. So to me everything is just fine. Good luck to all of you.
