UPDATED - Need help for MIDI setup with NS3 and other equip
I'm not sure where to turn, but I need some help to figure out the "best" way to set up a number of pieces of equipment. The hub of my live setup is my new Stage 3 88. I have two main playing scenarios: 1) live play out with my band and 2) live play and recording in my home studio.
It seems like I should be able to connect all devices (NS3, a couple other synths, NI S61 MkII, an Ableton Push 2, and a TC-Helicon VoiceLive) to my MacBook Pro via USB and everything should theoretically work. I just have a few questions:
1. Should I use the Nord as the MIDI clock or my Mac? I understand what the clock is and does, but I'm not sure if I need to worry about clock accuracy?
2. Should I use the NS3 Extern section to make program changes (as someone suggested to me) or should I use something like Ableton, GigPerformer, or MainStage? I do not need to automate anything at this time, so I was thinking Ableton would be needlessly complex.
Thank you all in advance for any help. Doing basic MIDI is easy enough for me, but in this case, I'm overwhelmed by all the options presented by all the equipment.

Re: Need help for MIDI setup with NS3 and other equip
Hi Jonathan,
It's better to describe what you want to achieve instead of what equipment you have (of course it's important to know what you have).
And to described this in a simple way. It's a good thing to draw this into a visio (or something else) and after that, how to connect technically all of the equipment.

I'm editing the original post to narrow the question, which will hopefully help.Berretje wrote:Hi Jonathan,

Re: UPDATED - Need help for MIDI setup with NS3 and other eq
I was about to post almost the same question but used the search engine and found this one so:
Question not as wide as Johnny Cash because my question is for live use only but similar:
On few songs I'm going to practice there is a lot of arpeggios and percussions that need to be synced between my Stage 2, the TC Electronic Ditto Looper X4 and my Prophets. I read on this forum that usually, the best master to use is the Drums box but I don't have one...And I don't want to carry a computer (In fact I don't have one available all the time...) live, so:
1) Should I use the Midi Clock on the Stage 2 to be the master?
2) Would it be better just to run a Midi Clock from an external "Midi clock box"? If yes, which one? (I'm asking about an external box because I know you could use an external clock in the studio to get better A/D-D/A conversion but this case is live and for midi only so...)
3) In each case, is there a risk of latency in sending midi clock info on top of the other midi infos like notes on/off etc... A kind of maximum "flow" that could go per second thru the midi...
4) If my drummer has to follow the tempo, how I give him the same tempo as the master clock: Currently, I just run a "Claps" loop from the Ditto looper into his headphone...But because the Claps are on beat 2 & 4 only (For Uptown Funk for example), he misses the beat quite often...And I will need to add percussions and arpeggios anyway, so, it's gonna be more complicated for him, so, a click track might be better?
5) I have in my Ipad Nord Beat 3. Would it be easier to use it, to program the loop into it and to get all devices synced from it? In this case, is there any risk that it will mess up Bandhelper/Setlist maker? I spent too much time in programming all the program changes that I don't want to take any risks....
Finally, if a moderator think it needs another thread, go for it, just change it
Sincerely
