Pitch bend via midi

Post by varignet »

Hi, I've been reading the manual as well as searched online but I find this subject quite confusing. I just ordered a nord electro 5d 73sw, can't wait for it to arrive.
I'm aware the ne5 doesn't have pitch bend, it's no biggie, but I was wondering if a scenario exists where an external midi joystick could be used to pitch bend synth sample sounds produced by the ne5d.
Many thanks

Welcome Varignet,
I've been interested in the same thing this week. Have a look at my posts on this subject.

Thank you.
I did see your post, I was hoping to use an android smartphone (there are a couple which control midi channels) and either a usb to usb cable or usb to midi cable. But it's no biggie if this isn't possible. Did you have any luck with weeel?
I wonder whether clavia would need to expand the pitch bend midi support before we attempt anything more

Not having pitch bend and a modulation wheel on the NE5 is no big problem for me either but even dirt cheap midi controllers and synths have a PB and a MW. I also wonder why modulation cc is ignored when you use a midi controller?. Here's hoping the midi implementation gets updated soon. Regarding the Weeel, no joy as yet but fingers crossed...

Received a reply from nord:
"There is one way to use external Pitch Bend on the Nord Electro 5. To do this one has to utilise the “Upper Receive” mode of the NE5, which is activated by defining an Upper Receive MIDI channel in the MIDI menu, and selecting “Upper Receive” as KB Split point. This mode is designed for the purpose of using a second keyboard to control one of the NE5 sound engines (organ, piano or synth). The external keyboard will play the sound selected for Part Upper on the NE5, and will also provide pitch bend functionality.
Let us know if you have any other questions at all, and we hope you will enjoy your NE5!"

So it seems it is not possible without using a second keyboard. Perhaps with enough requests we could persuade clavia to expand the pitchbend support to work when playing the ne5d keybed in the next os upgrade. I would recommend Big Jock to drop them a line asking for the same thing. I'll pm you with their support email

Seems if an external attachment (like the Ocean Beach drawbars) could provide PB & MW it would sell, or would that be too small a niche to even consider? : :keyboard:

I'll bet Ocean Beach Dave will have an opinion on that.... The fellow who produced the aftermarket expansion cards for Modular and G2 might also have an opinion on that...

Re: modulation: exactly what would you have modulated? Which parameter(s)? Obviously, Pitch Bend has a clearly known effect/definition, but this is not true with modulation. Rewriting OS to accept mod wheel cc data would imply not only simply accepting that data but also creating a scheme whereby it would variably be assigned to one or another parameter for each of three instrument sections. This is not simply a matter of enabling response to a particular cc number.
