On the synth section there are two Memories. One is the Sample Memory, that includes only the raw samples you put in it. Then you have the patch memory. They are separate. So you got 380 Megabytes of sample memory, up to 999 Sample Instruments. (whicher is filled first)

THEN you have 300 Patch memory locations. those 300 patches may be just the synth section or using a sample as an oscilator.
Synths: Nord Stage 2 SW, Nord Lead 4R, Vintage Vibe 64 Active, Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2, Minimoog Voyager, Prophet 6, Korg Volcas
Stand: K&M Spider Pro and Hercules X Stands
Recording: Zoom UAC-8
Speakers: EV ELXP 112-P, Event Alp 5

Or does these types of Samples not use the Synth Section Memory (and so use a different source) ??
Yes, you're right. the Synth patch memories do not store the actual samples, they simply "point to" the chosen sample ie they store the location number of the sample(s), which are themselves stored separately (in the Sample memory area, not too surprisingly). Thus the individual Synth patch memory size is roughly the same size as on the Stage classic/EX - just a bit bigger as they have a few more settings than the older synth section.

Thanks, it is the SAMPLE MEMORY that i am interested in. In general, is the available 380MB an adequate amount ??

No one can answer that for you, as the answer is different for different people.

If you're interested in Nord's own samples, you can go to their web site, look at all the sounds they offer in the sample library, look at how big the file sizes are, add them up, and see if you're approaching 380mb. In many cases, a single download includes many voices, and you don't have to load them all. You can get a rough idea of how big each one is by dividing the total download size by the number of sound samples included, but a far more accurate way would be to download the zip file and see how big the sounds you actually want are. But it doesn't take much effort to just do a quick review and get some sense of how far 380 mB will go.

Now, if you intend to create additional samples of your own, space can go more quickly, as most people don't have Nord's expertise in getting high quality samples into small amounts of memory. But again, it depends on what you're trying to do.

It's kind of like asking, is 10 gallons of gasoline adequate? To travel across town, sure. To travel coast to coast, not so much. ;-)

Ta AS,

Yes, it would be to use the downloadable Nord Sample Library rather than creating my own actual samples. i have an Emu Sampler for all the regular samples i use on gigs. i just wanted to beef up the Nord and add a few to the collection.

Perhaps you could start trying to find a way to convert all the samples you use into .wav or find equivalent ones.

Sure 380 MB is not enough to have ALLL the sounds. But I find that if you get your preferences down and try not to duplicate sounds (some samples are similar to others) then 380 is more than enough. I basically have all the M400 samples for my mellotron duties plus 3 chamberlin so all that is 54.6 MB, plus all my acoustic and electroacoustic samples (102.2 MB) and all the synth samples I like (176.4MB) and I still have 43.6 MB left. Probably going to fill it with the SC Sounds samples I am going to test. 40 mb at a time.

i do have a lot of Wav. file samples in my collection which i would consider transfering to the NS2 should i purchase one.

Though i would want to have permanently loaded onboard the Mellotron, Chamberlin and some Orchestral samples. The afforementioned Wav. files would be to fill up any spare space should there be any left.

My main concern was this, the Nord Stage Classic 'Grand Piano' memory is dreadfully inadequate and so i did not want to find myself in the same situation with the NS2 Sample and Synth memories. But from the sound of things i don't think i would have any problems in this particular area.

In all fairness, the Stage Classic piano memory was not so inadequate at the time the model was current, based on the size of the samples available at the time. Sure, it seems wimpy 5 years later... and honestly, I'd fully expect the 380 mb you're looking at to look terribly wimpy 5 years from now. ;-) If you do find it's not enough, though, while there's no Nord keyboard that can hold any more, in theory, I suppose you could at least resample some of those sounds to your Emu if you need access to more than 380 mb worth of 'em. Not that I have any idea what the capacity of the Emu is...

Yes, the Stage Classic was totally fine when it first came out i quite agree. But as you say, things move on over time and so what was groundbreaking five years ago is somewhat obsolete nowadays.

The bulk of my sampling library is already on my Emu, but as i said i would be looking to beef up the NS2 with some of the downloadable samples.
