That felt like it got weird fast….(pun intended).

Count - did you wake up on the wrong side of the studio?? :-)

Dcjams - thanks for the links and insights.

As for felt piano, glad there’s a new sample. Not useful for my purposes but I’m not Nord’s only customer :-)

I know right?! Wtf. :wtf: He's left me a PM. I would read it but I'm too busy composing :keyboard2:

Steinberg Cubase 12 Pro comes with a beautiful felt piano virtual instrument called Verve.
What do you think about compared to the Nord felt piano ?

Well, as often happens online, it’s difficult to know what someone means just by words alone. For example, I was being lighthearted with the Count - you may have interpreted my meaning as trying to pounce on him. I added the smiley emoji to try to help convey meaning, but that’s not always successful.

I don’t think he was trying to dis you (for whatever that’s worth) and whether I’m right or wrong on that view, let’s get back to the discussion at hand.

Glad felt is working for you. I’m still patiently waiting for Nord’s sample of the Klavins 450i vertical concert grand - I’ve been told not to hold my breath…

Until then, I’m pretty happy with White, Lady D and a few others - would LOVE an XL Lady D and Yamaha C7 (I think those are called Studio if I remember correctly)…felt just answers a question I’m not asking :-)

I've just googled that Klavins gargantuan piano: what's the point? Is it just a gimmick or does it actually feature a superb and unique sound?

There are some great (and not so great) videos on YouTube that demonstrate what a 5 meter bass string does to the sound of a piano. It’s pretty glorious. Check out his Una Cordas too. The man’s a genius!

I realise that if you only deal with acoustic instruments and direct sound, there is only one "preset", and the sound is what it is (ignoring that even that isn't true, since hammer density can be adjusted, strings sound different, and placement in/treatment of the room make considerable differences).

But the second any sort of sound reproduction system is involved, all bets are off and the options become almost limitless for reconstituting what people expect as a "natural" piano sound.

That "good acoustic piano sample" is already the result of a dozen different processing choices — from mics placement and mics used, through preamp chain, to EQ and compression used when recording the sample and/or in processing.

Putting that through an amp and speakers is another almost limitless array of choices, and all of them may require adjustment of that already processed "perfect" sample.

Applying "purist" principles to sampled pianos is like talking purist cooking ethic when using Velveeta.

You may like what it does, but it makes no sense to argue that it shouldn't be processed because good cheese should stand on its own.

It's ironic that that Brian May AC30 IS A REGULAR AC30, except that out of all the sound processing options (gain/distortion, basic EQ), it's just set to one particular hard-wired setting. And nobody who buys it is going to use JUST that amp for everything — it's just one processing option.

Count's not being hostile, it's his Ozzie sense of humor

Point taken. I apologise.
