Not so fast! As I said, this may be true for the Roland, but it is generally not true for the Nord (only for the Extern section). So be sure to check the MIDI options of the Roland to see if you can disable it.

Does the Roland have a "local off" setting? If so, the following might work:
  • Set the Roland to "local off" (no local playback of notes).
  • Connect the instruments with MIDI cables in both directions.
  • Transpose only the Nord, not the Roland.
  • Turn off global MIDI on the Nord, and activate slot-specific MIDI instead for one slot, using the same channel. Deactivate everything else in the MIDI menu.
  • In the Extern menu, set the channel to the same value as well. Also, activate "soft thru". Deactivate everything else.
  • Turn on the Extern section.
Now the Roland should send untransposed notes to the Nord. The Nord will hopefully transpose them before doing anything else, and send them back to the Roland after that.

Good luck!

The issue is this:
Transpose means that when you hit a key, a different note *sounds*. Now, whether this is transmitted out of the MIDI port is a slightly different thing. I am not too sure how this is implemented across manufacturers, but...

NS2's MIDI out on the GLOBAL channel does not transpose the MIDI notes.
NS2's MIDI out on the EXTERN channel does transpose the MIDI notes.

It seems that the Roland behaves like the EXTERN midi in the NS2.
Maybe the Roland has a mode to avoid transposing the MIDI messages (but I do not know).

So if you used the NS2 as your master and the Roland as slave, you could transpose both *and* use the GLOBAL channel on the NS2 and you could play the way you want.
