Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
P.S.: another one with a small footprint but a much lower price is the DBX DJDI
Edit: no through of the input signal though

Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
Again, maybe I'm missing something but if Mel only needs a copy of the signal for personal monitoring, why not just use the 3 and/or 4 output of the NS3?
If the point is adding as little complication as possible, a DI box seems like an unnecessary additional box+cables.
Btw, I never understood the point of having personal DI boxes. For small gigs, when short (less than 10 m) cables are more than enough to run sound, they are superfluous. For large gigs I've played, they were always provided by the organization/soundman (and we invlude them in the rider, just in case). Bottom line, I've never owned one nor felt the need to buy one.

Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
That's not always the case especially with passive DI's. In working on live recording DIs would used to keep the number of mic's on stage down, but the split from the DI one side was weaker than the other. The recording truck would get the stronger signal and the FOH would get the weaker signal. FOH engineers weren't happy but recording took priority to the band's management. Active DI's the signals should be equal since there is a circuit splitting the signal not just a transformer as in passive.Mr_-G- wrote:Check the DI box you have, they often have a "Hi Z Out" which is a mirror of the unbalanced input. You can use that to connect to your monitor.

I think some effects will disappear when routed away from outputs 1 and 2. The Leslie sim is one of them. I run my Organ through output 3 and it removes the Leslie sim automagically.Spider wrote:Again, maybe I'm missing something but if Mel only needs a copy of the signal for personal monitoring, why not just use the 3 and/or 4 output of the NS3?

DI boxes are very useful! I've always had them in my rig for 35+ years. Sound engineers at venues large and small are always happy with this. Lately my DI is connected to my mixer, whether that is the built in DIs in the Radial KL-8 or Key Largo.

Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
If the DI box that Mel mentions is this one, it indeed has a parallel output:

I have no idea if it would attenuate the signal to a level that cannot be compensated at the FOH, but it might be worth checking.

I use a KL-8 as well and sound people love that they can just plug in one or two XLR cables and they are done-ericL wrote:I think some effects will disappear when routed away from outputs 1 and 2. Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
Headphones for on stage? No, haven’t considered. Thought iem would be better choice. Hmmm. I’ve been going the basic mono wired to the pa and my monitor for years it’s worked well. Sometimes I use that little old DI box, but not always. Have experienced sound guys equipped and non equipped with DIs.maxpiano wrote:If need only your NS3 in the monitor, have you considered using the Headphones output for that? Then, if you also want to send stereo to the FOH yes you need 2 DIs (or a stereo=dual channel DI)
But I don’t wanna steer this discussion to iem, I’m already perplexed enough. The radial products are way out of my league still, I don’t want a rack set up, I already carry a furman power conditioner, rack style wrapped in a homemade wood casing. While I’m in between DIs, I think it best to find just another mono DI, as a replacement or combo to the existing one. A change most likely not be audible, but I will have the piece on hand and use it until another splurge of ideas hits me. Lots of good input here though. If I hear a hummmm then back to the grind.

Re: 2 DI boxes or stereo Direct
Here is a list of suitable Stereo Direct Boxes. All of these can be used as a single channel or dual channel DI. If you don't wan't to connect it in stereo just use one channel (either left or right, they are both the same)
These range in price from about $70 to $140. Any of these will do exactly what you need them to do, and for your purposes will sound pretty much identical. The advantage to a single box stereo solution is its one less thing to carry around.
