Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
Sussko, Thanks to maxpiano he has linked to the Youtube demos by Mex. Is there anything here that you like the sound of? In a quiet studio environment the slightly brighter ones eg EP1 comes over pretty well and takes effects well. Nefertiti does sound a bit dark here but it is much fatter than the others. When I use it I cut bass 70% , boost mids 60%, boost treble 40%. Remembering with fondness all my analog gear, through an amp pushed it is the closest I have got to a real Rhoads with a digital recreation

No, sustain that comes from a compressor is not the same as real sustain that comes from the tines.analogika wrote:
Add compressor to get more sustain (it’s how it was recorded), and some distortion to get a bit of crunch.

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
The sustain you hear on Herbie records is a Rhodes heavily compressed from pushing a tube amp and additional compression after the mic.daniel70 wrote:No, sustain that comes from a compressor is not the same as real sustain that comes from the tines.analogika wrote:

The Nord giveth; the Nord taketh away…

Yes, he used compressors on his recordings, indeed. But before the compression comes a long, natural sustain from the piano itself. For me a long sustain is an important part of the magical sound of a well maintained Rhodes - and i played many of them in the last 35 years...analogika wrote:The sustain you hear on Herbie records is a Rhodes heavily compressed from pushing a tube amp and additional compression after the mic.daniel70 wrote:No, sustain that comes from a compressor is not the same as real sustain that comes from the tines.analogika wrote:

Re: Herbie Hancock Rhodes Sound?
Yes, not only that if you were recording on to analog tape and kept the levels high (but not distorted)
Compression occurred there too. If the mixer had tubes preamps, same thing………

In the MeX video, he said that he uses Nefertiti and he eq it a a lot, he put eq mid frequency at 12.00, and gain at maximum. MAXIMUM!
And he is a professionist, specialized in real Rhodes sound.

[quote="AndyG1955"] The Nefertiti works for me but I still prefer the original, my opinion is the larger sample does not play as well dynamically when soloing single lines over the left hand, it seems to flatten everything out.[quote=„AndyG1955“]
Same with me. After a lot of trying and tweaking in the last days, I like the dynamic response on the original Nefertiti sample more then the „enhanced“ version.

In the video linked by maxpiano in the second page of this thread, at no point whatsoever he says such thing.hrestov wrote:In the MeX video, he said that he uses Nefertiti and he eq it a a lot, he put eq mid frequency at 12.00, and gain at maximum. MAXIMUM!

Maybe you are referring to another video of his?
Btw personally I like his playing style, but I don't find his videos super helpful because he is kinda hard to follow in his thoughts.

Yes, I know what hrestov is referring to and it is in another video, where he was using a NS2EX (IIRC, but I can't find it now); btw there is yet another video from MeX on this topic, which is quite interesting and based on NS3:Hlaalu wrote:In the video linked by maxpiano in the second page of this thread, at no point whatsoever he says such thing.hrestov wrote:In the MeX video, he said that he uses Nefertiti and he eq it a a lot, he put eq mid frequency at 12.00, and gain at maximum.
